Solar-powered bin holds five to 10 times more garbage

A high-tech garbage can that sucks up more than its share of trash is being tested in Esquimalt.
The Big Belly trash compactor -- a bright-green, solar-powered, garbage-eating marvel -- has been placed in front of the Esquimalt Plaza on Esquimalt Road for a period of evaluation by municipal staff and council's environmental advisory committee. The one-month trial will determine whether the Big Belly, touted to hold five to 10 times the garbage of a normal receptacle, is worth the cost. It had proven popular in a number of American cities, where its price is reported in the $4,000 to $5,000 range.
Environmental advisory committee members like councillors Jane Sterk and Barbara Desjardins have expressed enthusiasm about the potential for Big Belly technology, especially for large-scale community events such as Buccaneer Days. Gilbert Cote, Esquimalt's director of engineering and public works, said the feedback from employees has been positive so far.
Workers said they have had to empty the Big Belly just once in two weeks, while an average garbage can have to be emptied as many as six times per week.

I predict an American sailor will somehow be killed by this thing. They manage to die by falling off of railings when they converge on downtown, so my prediction isn't as far out as some may think.

But you know what will happen with this garbage can plan. They say they only have to pick up every couple of weeks but you know every day some idiot is going to clog it up with a broken umbrella or a tree branch or a bag of household garbage.

I noticed today that the solar trash compactor outside Starbucks is now gone. According to the barista, despite it only needing to be emptied once every four days (as opposed to every day) the improvements didn't justify it's $7,000 cost. There's been one of these sitting out in front of the Starbucks in Oak Bay (under the neon sign) for about a month now.

If one is emptying them once every 4 days, or less in a very busy location, how long do that take to start to "hummm" just like the garbage bins below and behind Cap'n Vancouver...
