UK:

Reported cases at lowest level for a month

The number of daily coronavirus cases in the UK are at the lowest level in a month. Another 81,713 cases were reported on Saturday. The apparent ebbing of the Omicron wave comes as some experts claim the end of the pandemic is in sight for the UK. However, the number of deaths within 28 days of a test remains high, with 1,843 over the past seven days - a 45% rise from the previous week.

Newsweek:

New documents, released Tuesday by Republican members of the House Oversight Committee, show Dr. Fauci and former National Institutes of Health (NIH) director Dr. Francis Collins making an effort in early 2020 to stamp out discussion of the lab-leak hypothesis—even though scientists convened by Dr. Fauci thought a lab origin of SARS-CoV-2 was a plausible, even a likely, hypothesis.

Did Dr. Fauci use his position and his public platform to chill debate about the possibility that COVID-19 leaked from the Wuhan Institute of Virology? It certainly appears so. In a January 11 letter to Secretary of Health and Human Services Xavier Becerra, Reps. James Comer (R-Ky.) and Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) lay out the timeline of events: "On February 1, 2020, Dr. Fauci, Dr. Collins, and at least eleven other scientists convened a conference call to discuss COVID-19. It was on this conference call that Drs. Fauci and Collins were first warned that COVID-19 may have leaked from the [Wuhan Institute of Virology] and, further, may have been intentionally genetically manipulated." This was all just days after Fauci was made aware—if he wasn't already—that his agency had funded coronavirus experiments on animals with gain-of-function potential at the Wuhan lab.

Emails released to the Oversight Committee show that only three days after the conference call, four participants of the call conveniently authored a paper dismissing a lab leak as impossible and sent a draft to Fauci and Collins for editing and approval.

Covid origins: Wuhan lab leak theory resurfaces as Dr Anthony Fauci’s emails are released to US oversight committee

What is slowly becoming clear is that a host of top scientists chose to dismiss the lab leak theory for political and funding reasons, rather than scientific ones.

A Liberal MP who works as a medical doctor says he's in favour of making unvaccinated Canadians pay some kind of a special tax — and he believes others in his party agree.

"We already have taxes on tobacco. We have taxes on alcohol, which are there for similar reasons because people who consume those products are more likely to end up in the hospital," said MP Marcus Powlowski in a panel discussion with fellow MPs airing Saturday on CBC's The House. "And as a result, we're all going to have to pay for their hospitalization."

Superstar Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers has fallen precipitously in an annual ranking of the National Football League’s “Most-Liked Skill Players” following a season of controversy over the Covid-19 vaccine.
https://www.mediaite...r-vaccine-flap/

Pro football star turned Republican Senate candidate Herschel Walker will not say whether he has been vaccinated. But in Walker’s mind, he may not need the shot.

That’s because, months before the vaccine was available, Walker was swearing by—and encouraging others to use—unproven mystery treatments, including an allegedly FDA-approved “dry mist” that will “kill any COVID on your body.”

In an August 2020 interview with right-wing talk show host Glenn Beck, Walker hyped two unspecified aerosol COVID prophylactics. One was the aforementioned “dry mist,” for use in an interior environment; the other was some sort of “spray.”

Walker dropped the big news unprompted about 40 minutes into the interview, amid a discussion of law enforcement, beginning by telling Beck that he “probably shouldn’t tell you.”

“Do you know right now, I have something that [you can bring] into a building, that will clean you of COVID, as you walk through this, this dry mist?” Walker asks.

Beck, processing this information, squints. Walker interprets this as an invitation to proceed.

“As you walk through the door, it will kill any COVID on your body,” he continues. He leans in and adds, “EPA-, FDA-approved.”

MOSCOW, January 16. /TASS/. The way the novel coronavirus pandemic develops suggests that the virus will never go away completely, circulating as an endemic disease instead, WHO Representative to Russia Melita Vujnovic has told the Soloviev Live YouTube channel.

"Coronavirus is on its way to becoming an endemic disease. This means it won’t go away. But we have learned how to treat it and how to protect ourselves from it. Most importantly, we need to contain the outbreak of the infection now and reduce the number of those vulnerable to it. Otherwise, new variants will emerge in an unpredictable fashion," she said.

In her words, it was too early for the humanity to relax.

"Apart from vaccination, it is of utmost importance now to follow other safeguards as well: to wear a face mask and change it at recommended intervals, to ventilate rooms and avoid large groups of people in confined spaces. This is very important, Vujnovic said.

Xinhua News Agency, Guangzhou, January 16 (Reporter Wang Haoming) The reporter learned from a press conference on epidemic prevention and control in Zhuhai City, Guangdong Province on the 16th that from 0:00 to 15:00 on the 16th, Zhuhai City added 2 local confirmed cases, accumulative Nine confirmed cases of COVID-19 and one asymptomatic infection were reported. Zhuhai City will carry out a round of nucleic acid testing for all employees every day for three consecutive days from the 16th.

As he filled out the form, he noticed that certain aspects of the testing site were unusual. The testing seemed disorganized and the site did not have much signage. Unlike other places he had been tested, the workers did not give him a vial to store his nasal swab.

“I was just holding it walking up to the crowd and asked, ‘What am I supposed to do with this swab, there’s no tube to put it in,’ and he’s like, ‘Oh, you just put it back in the wrapper, and then you put it back in the baggie, and then you put it in this bucket,’” Middendorf said. “That seemed really weird. Also, that’s not how you do a PCR.”

The recent surge in Omicron cases has generated a colossal demand for COVID-19 tests, and a draining supply of rapid tests and dwindling appointment availability at testing centers has created a vacuum for a new flood of unapproved testing sites.

Unauthorized pop-up testing sites are spreading in cities across the country, including Chicago, Philadelphia, Houston, San Antonio, San Francisco, and many others, with officials warning that scammers may be seeking to charge fees and obtain personal information such as social security numbers through fraudulent operations

“There has been an increase in people wanting to be tested that contributed to long wait times and may have also contributed to unscrupulous operators taking advantage of the situation,” said Cleo Garcia, spokesperson for the San Antonio Metropolitan Health District (SAMHD). She added that supply chain issues have been the biggest barrier faced by licensed testing providers.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of the Inspector General released a fraud alert on Jan. 4 warning that personal information collected through COVID-19-related scams like illegitimate testing “can be used to fraudulently bill federal health care programs and commit medical identity theft.”

The site Middendorf attended was run by the Center for COVID Control, an organization that has come under scrutiny in the last few days after receiving numerous complaints to city health departments and the Better Business Bureau about failure to provide results and suspicious testing and reporting practices.

Scott Packard, the spokesperson for the Houston Health Department, told Prism that HHD works with several agencies to provide free testing sites across the city, and that it inquires about safety protocols, laboratory certification, logistics, and other elements of testing before listing them as HHD-affiliated.

“Center for COVID Control is not an HHD partner agency,” Packard confirmed.

During a rally on Saturday in Florence, Arizona, former President Donald Trump claimed that white people are being discriminated against in the allotment of COVID-19 treatments.

"The left is now rationing life-saving therapeutics based on race, discriminating against and denigrating, just denigrating white people to determine who lives and who dies," Trump said.

"You get it based on race. In fact, in New York state, if you're white, you have to go to the back of the line to get medical help. If you're white, you go right to the back of the line."

The former president referenced a recent Wall Street Journal opinion article titled "New York's Race-Based Preferential Covid Treatments."

The article says that COVID-19 treatments such as monoclonal antibodies and oral antivirals are in short supply and that New York state has published guidelines outlining how to allocate them to those most in need.

The guidelines state that "non-white race or Hispanic/Latino ethnicity should be considered a risk factor" because of "longstanding systemic health and social inequities" that increase the risk of severe illness and death from COVID-19.

The health departments of Utah and Minnesota have published similar guidelines.

Hispanic or Latino people die of COVID-19 at a rate of 2.1x compared to white people, and Black or African American people die at a rate of 1.9x, according to data from The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

For folks who would rather not have the Republican Party, or some right wing rag interpret, edit, or summarize Fauci's emails for them, here's a link to all of the emails that were released as a result of the FOI applicaition:

https://www.document...ny-fauci-emails

If you read all of them with an impassioned eye, you'll discover that they're not even close to what the GOP would like you to believe they are.

If you're not willing to take the time to read them all for yourself, please don't bother commenting on them, as you would be woefully misinformed (even though I realize that accuracy and honesty has never remotely been a consideration for the anti-vax crowd in the past).

Dreadful consequences

https://peckford42.wordpress.com/

I feel this way at times, I'm sure we all do. These lockdowns were a social experiment, in time we will learn they failed completely. I hope someone is held accountable.

CDC are on the record now admitting that 75% of Covid deaths had at least 4 other issues ie. they were very ill. I read today that the number of otherwise healthy folk dying from Covid-19, could be a as low as 6%  (folk that had reported no other illness)

5 million total covid deaths?  6% so under 300,000

How many die each year of the flu? WHO put that number between 300,000 - 650,000

As we learn more I'm certain the shock will turn to anger. Now we have the truckers mandate to deal with, at this time, this late in this so called pandemic..

You have to ask, what is the point?

Health Canada approves Pfizer antiviral COVID-19 pill The authorization posted to the Health Canada website this morning says the treatment is approved for adult patients with mild or moderate COVID-19 who are also at high risk of becoming more seriously ill.

Paxlovid is a treatment that uses a combination of drugs to prevent the virus that causes COVID-19 from replicating once it has infected a patient.

The agency did not authorize it for use on teenagers or patients who are already hospitalized because of COVID-19.

Eric Lawlor was in a meeting about a tuberculosis outbreak in his community in December when he got a call from Nunavut’s top doctor telling him a resident had just tested positive for COVID-19.

The mayor of Pangnirtung says the COVID-19 case quickly became his biggest concern.

“Once COVID came, we totally lost track of the TB stuff.”

It was the first case of COVID-19 to reach Pangnirtung. The Baffin Island hamlet of about 1,400 people had also been dealing with a tuberculosis outbreak since late November.

Lawlor said health workers, already overwhelmed with the TB outbreak, had to quickly shift to protect the community from COVID-19.

“It was stressful at first, watching the numbers and praying they didn’t climb.”

The latest wave of COVID-19 would soon reach some of Nunavut’s smallest communities and stretch the territory’s health-care resources to its limits. As of Friday, there were five active cases in Pangnirtung.

Lawlor said residents knew TB was in the community last summer. In November, the Nunavut Health Department declared an outbreak when it became clear the disease was spreading among households.

The department told The Canadian Press it could not confirm how many active cases of TB are currently in Pangnirtung.

Lawlor said despite the overlapping outbreaks, the community has kept its COVID-19 case count low and followed public health orders.

“People are taking it well and doing what they can to follow the rules and stay indoors. We’re getting through this,” he said.

The economic rebound from the pandemic plunge is set to moderate in Canada, Germany, Italy and the UK, according to OECD’s leading indictors.

The journey Dr. Robin Duncan—a Canadian researcher at the University of Waterloo in Ontario—took to uncovering the ability of CBD to potentially “prime” cells against COVID-19 was smoother, but not without its own “comical” hangups, she said. Though cannabis and research around it are both highly-regulated by Health Canada, the country’s federal health agency, use and possession of cannabis has been legal federally since 2018, sold to consumers through provincial retailers and doled out to researchers for study and growth through the federal Cannabis Act.

Unlike van Breemen, Duncan received federal funding from a Canadian research council for her work, but she, like many in the US, underwent layers of bureaucracy to do it. Per federal policy, she was required to implement security protocols around her lab and had to apply for a research license from the federal health agency for her latest paper, which was published as a pre-print this week while under review in the peer-reviewed Journal Life Sciences.

Unlike in the states, Duncan had the option to purchase synthetic preparations of cannabis compounds from a private supplier—in this case, a research company, at around $5,000 per gram.

“I can't just go to the Ontario Cannabis Store and then use that in my research,” she said. “That wouldn't be considered acceptable. I need a research license for this, even though it's available.”

“It's almost comical because it takes months and months to get it done,” Duncan said. “It takes probably a week to fill out the paperwork. And in the end, I'm buying, like, a milligram at a time of CBD.”

Duncan’s research offers a promising expansion of the global COVID-19 prevention and treatment arsenal, but roadblocks in the research process, like those that van Breemen has faced, have kept her findings from publication until nearly two years into the pandemic.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - The first two years of the COVID-19 pandemic have helped doubling of fortunes of the world's ten richest people, who now are six times wealthier than the poorest 3.1 billion people, Oxfam, international charitable NGO, reported on Monday, ahead of the World Economic Forum's Davos from 17-21 January.

"The world's ten richest men more than doubled their fortunes from $700 billion to $1.5 trillion —at a rate of $15,000 per second or $1.3 billion a day— during the first two years of a pandemic that has seen the incomes of 99 percent of humanity fall and over 160 million more people forced into poverty," the Oxfam statement said.

Oxfam observed that the COVID-19 pandemic has facilitated such an unprecedented rise of billionaires’ wealth, which has grown more than in the last 14 years, making them six times more wealthier than the poorest 3.1 billion people around the world.

"Central banks pumped trillions of dollars into financial markets to save the economy, yet much of that has ended up lining the pockets of billionaires riding a stock market boom. Vaccines were meant to end this pandemic, yet rich governments allowed pharma billionaires and monopolies to cut off the supply to billions of people," Oxfam International's Executive Director Gabriela Bucher said.

Meanwhile, Oxfam claims that growing inequality contributes to the daily deaths of at least 21,000 people who suffer from limited access to health care, gender-based violence, malnutrition and climate disruption.

The Serbian tennis star lost his fight for an Australian visa after it was revoked by the country's foreign minister. Djokovic, who has refused to get a vaccine, but was treated for COVID recently, will not be allowed to compete in this year's Australia Open championship, which he has won the last three years in a row.

Former Serbian tennis player, Bojana Jovanovski, has expressed support for her compatriot, tennis star Novak Djokovic, adding that he was subjected to an "injustice", with which Serbs have become all too familiar when he was stripped of his Australian visa.

"But at least we are used to injustice, and regardless of the outcome of this humiliating agony that was prepared for you, you are not alone – you are our greatest pride. It is up to you now to fight for justice no matter what and no matter the outcome – to do your best in that fight."

Jovanovski went on to draw parallels between the sports star's recent fight against the Australian authorities and regulations and the "injustice" that they both saw their country go through during their childhood when NATO bombed then-Yugoslavia in 1999.

SHANGHAI -- China's gross domestic product growth slowed to 4.0% on the year in the fourth quarter of 2021, delivering a full-year result of 8.1%, as a COVID-19 resurgence and a real estate downturn combined to restrain economic momentum.

The figures, announced on Monday by the National Bureau of Statistics, beat the average forecasts of 3.3% for the quarter and 7.9% for the year in a Nikkei poll of economists released last month.

But the number for October to December decelerated from the 4.9% growth achieved in the previous three months, hitting the weakest level since the 3.1% logged for the COVID-marred second quarter of 2020.

On a quarterly basis, the economy grew a modest 1.6% in the final term of 2021, as sporadic coronavirus outbreaks resulted in strict lockdowns that hurt consumption. At the same time, high-profile credit defaults by Chinese property developers, notably Evergrande Group, undermined confidence among homebuyers and real estate investors.

The sluggish growth will lead to monetary easing and fiscal support this year, economists predict, after the government last month pledged to maintain stability. Already on Monday, the central bank cut rates on medium-term loans for the first time since April 2020.

Xinhua News Agency, Beijing, January 17. The official website of the Beijing Winter Olympics Organizing Committee announced on the 17th that on September 30, 2021, the key policies for the prevention and control of the COVID-19 epidemic of the Beijing Winter Olympics were released, and it was clear that tickets were not sold to overseas audiences, but only to domestic audiences. Tickets will be sold to spectators who meet the relevant requirements for epidemic prevention and control.

In view of the still severe and complicated situation of epidemic prevention and control, in order to protect the health and safety of Olympic-related personnel and spectators, it was decided to adjust the original plan to sell tickets through the public to directionally organize spectators to watch the game on-site. After watching the game, strictly abide by the relevant requirements for the prevention and control of the COVID-19 epidemic, so as to create a good atmosphere for the smooth holding of the game under the premise of epidemic prevention and control.

Apple now requires store and corporate employees to get a COVID-19 booster shot, the company announced in an internal email seen by The Verge.

Once an employee is eligible to get a booster shot, they will have four weeks to comply, otherwise, they will need to take frequent tests to enter a retail store, partner store, or Apple office starting on February 15th. Apple will require unvaccinated employees — or those who haven’t yet submitted proof of vaccination — to provide negative COVID-19 rapid antigen tests before entering the workplace beginning on January 24th, although it’s unclear whether this applies to both corporate and retail employees.

“Due to waning efficacy of the primary series of COVID-19 vaccines and the emergence of highly transmissible variants such as Omicron, a booster shot is now part of staying up to date with your COVID-19 vaccination to protect against severe disease,” Apple states in the memo.

Last year, Apple asked that unvaccinated corporate employees take daily tests before entering the office, with unvaccinated retail workers testing twice per week. The company also began requiring vaccinated individuals to take COVID-19 tests once every week, and later lowered the frequency of these tests. It appears that Apple’s “infrequent” testing policy no longer applies to employees who don’t receive the booster shot by Apple’s deadline, however.

In a virtual session of the World Economic Forum, Fauci said: "It's very disturbing, I believe to all of us as public health officials and scientists, such a degree of pushback against regular, normal, easy-to-understand public health measures. Reluctance to wear masks, reluctance to promote vaccination, reluctance to do kinds of public health measures."

He continued: "You make the virus have an advantage when you don't implement, in a unified way, all the very well-recognised public health measures — particularly the vaccines."

Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, added: "Even for a rich country like the United States, that supposedly was the best-prepared country for a pandemic, we are among a handful of the countries that have actually suffered the most. When you look now at the 65 million cases and the close to 900,000 deaths in our country, that is really, truly unfortunate, and something that we would have hoped would have been avoided."
