Even though May 12 is brutally long from now I’m glad Tam throughout a date. Gotta start somewhere. I think the true measure of governments will be in how they lead the recovery. It’s one thing to shut down an economy, another thing to get it back

So now Ms. Tam says that she can figure things out next week. https://www.cbc.ca/n...virus-1.5514242

I guess the feedback on May 12th wasn't good.

No worries, it is not like the dates are just made up.

A few lives. How many lives are going to be lost when people realize their life savings are worthless, their private pensions bankrupt, and their cash devalued due to hyperinflation?

There is a reason why the military is now on "war footing".

By a few you mean about 300,000 + however many more due to completely overloaded hospitals.

Not to mention quite unpredictable what would happen during a truly uncontrolled outbreak.  No restrictions on the economy but rampant infection, with the military carting away bodies from hospitals.   Do you really think the economy would go on unimpacted?  The tourism industry would still have collapsed and restaurant business would be down drastically.

Pretty slow on Johnson Street bridge: https://youtu.be/fhi_sNlCk_U

Everyone is in Sidney apparently... besides most stores being closed, you'd never know anything out of the ordinary was going on up here by the sheer numbers of people out and about.

We seem to be going around in circles, but I maintain you have no basis for assuming that economy would be better if the pandemic was allowed to run unbridled. I don't believe that is true. There seem to be a lot economists that don't believe that either, as per the survey below:

What's with the endless negativity?  You expect them to magically know when this is over when no one does?  Uncharted territory for everyone.

^spanky has a personal grudge with government. Nothing they do during this pandemic will satisfy him. Not worth the time arguing the inane points he makes. It all comes from that one angle.

C'mon. This morning she says they can't judge a trend until May 12th and this afternoon she says next week and you don't question that?

how about i try this approach then.  how much better would our economy be if nobody died from the flu or car crashes each year?  or heart disease and cancer?

who would have guessed eh?  destroy people's jobs livelihoods and life savings and people are going to kill themselves.

The "stay-at-home" order in effect across Oregon can have a big impact on people’s mental health, and Portland police officials said they are seeing a dramatic change in their response to people in crisis.

Calls for threats or attempts of suicide are up 41% over this time last year, and up 23% from the 10 days prior to the state of emergency in Portland, Police Chief Jami Resch said in a news conference Tuesday.

“We do know that people are struggling, and we want to get out as many resources to folks as possible by encouraging you to contact friends and family, whether it’s by phone, text, video chat. Check in with each other, know that there are resources available,” Resch said.

The finance minister of the regional state of Germany’s financial centre Frankfurt, Thomas Schaefer, committed suicide.

In a joint statement from police and the public prosecutor’s office on Saturday, Schaefer – who led the finance ministry of Hess for almost a decade – was found dead next to railway tracks near Frankfurt.

Authorities gave no information official motive behind Schaefer’s death, concluding he killed himself due after “extensive crime scene work, the questioning of numerous witnesses, the situation on site and the technical and forensic evaluations and investigations,” Reuters reported.

However, on Sunday, German State governor Volker Bouffier said the Schaefer’s death was linked to the COVID-19 crisis.

Bouffier said Schaefer stressed about whether “it would be possible to succeed in fulfilling the population’s huge expectations, particularly of financial help.”

The alcohol ban in Kerala seems to be killing more people than the virus itself in the state, which has one of India’s highest per capita liquor consumption. The state, like the rest of India, has been forced to go dry in the wake of the ongoing 21-day nationwide lockdown.

In the past week, seven people committed suicide out of depression over not being able to buy alcohol in Kerala, while the virus has resulted in one casualty so far.

...the virus kills randomly...

...suicide self-selects ...

will the death toll be greater by one method or another? and if so, do you have a preference?

Sidney’s top emergency official told the public Sunday afternoon that he is not aware of any cases of COVID-19 in the community.

“We are not aware of any [known cases] in Sidney,” said Randy Humble, Sidney’s chief administrative officer, who currently serves as director of Sidney’s emergency operations centre (EOC). Humble made that comment during Sunday’s virtual town hall organized by Coun. Peter Wainwright. “I think the province has made it clear, certainly the updates that are being provided by the provincial health office, it’s all based on regional health areas in terms of the updates in B.C.”

As of March 28, Island Health recorded 60 out of 884 total cases. “The only areas where they are really indicating [the specific location] is when you have a COVID case within an actual care facility,” said Humble. “We are in constant daily contact at the EOC with our seven care facilities within the municipality, and again no indication has been given with respect to a case in a local facility, which is excellent, very promising.”

Humble made that comment towards the end of the hour-long virtual town hall that also included Mayor Cliff McNeil-Smith, who said during his opening remarks that the term “unprecedented” has taken on new meaning during the current COVID-19 crisis.

Sunday’s forum, which drew between 23 and 26 participants, touched on a wide range of subjects, including the economic effects of the crisis on local business and efforts to combat them.

that tune-in rate is a bit of a fail.  they used zoom which required residents to add software.  why not just facebook or youtube or twitter?

Apparently Ben isitt feels that existing delivery solutions for restaurants and pharmacies are not sufficient during the pandemic and thus the City needs to create its own app. To be debated at the next COTW meeting

Also a motion to make City parkades free for the month of April due to the pandemic. Apparently folks don't want to use public transit anymore.

i'm ok with them making the parkades free.  except does that mean all monthly pass holders get the month free of fees?  that might not be smart.  can't we just make parkades say $2 for all day parking?

the other idea is silly.

Where is the source saying May 12?  Can’t find it anywhere outside VV.
