It might have a headquarters (office) in Seattle, but it is based in the Netherlands.

Actually, Panama. Holland America Line is owned by Carnival plc, which is an American company registered in Panama. Most of Holland America's ships are flagged in the Netherlands, but some in other countries.

Cruise lines are all just a big tax evasion scheme.

They're just in the NL so that they can pull the old "Double Irish with a Dutch Sandwich".

Incredible: Trudeau now claims he "set aside for a rainy day". He did not pay off one penny of debt or put one penny in a rainy day fund of any kind. In fact, he added about $70B in new debt before the first COVID case hit our shores. He started this year w a $27b deficit

You misunderstood, he was talking about his own exit strategy.

Companies running under foreign flags to avoid federal taxes (virtually all cruise ship companies) do not qualify for bail out funding from the countries they are based out of.  Will be curious to see what happens to them.....

These companies need to seek help from the countries where they are based.   Liberia and Panama are going to have to find a lot of money to bail out the cruise companies.    These companies chose to have their ships in countries without government resources.   Let the companies go under.   The ships will still exist post bankruptcy and someone will find a use for them.

This could be a good time to end this flag of convenience thing.  They did not want to contribute to the countries they work out of, let them go under.

Yes good idea. They are purely leisure. It’s not like international trade or cargo will suffer without them for a while.

Well it looks like we are finally starting to get to the point where "we are all in this together". Alberta is laying off 20,000 public sector employees. https://calgaryheral...ink-slip-binge/

I am hearing that local municipalities will start mid-April as they update their budgets.

By the end of the month we will probably be down to essential services in all levels of Government.

People are going to take holidays when things calm down.   The money spent on vacations will be spent if there are cruises or not.

I would like to see all ships globally be required to flag in the nation they spend the majority of their time.

I would also like to see an international agreement that companies have to pay their taxes to the countries where they derive their revenues and not be allowed to offshore any income without first paying a fair share of taxes

People are not going to be taking vacations for a very long time. We have been conditioned to fear a single infection and until we have a vaccine with widespread vaccinations then there are always going to be new infections popping up and a counter to tell us about them.

the problem more so is wages. Alaska cruises would cost $12,000 if minimum wages were followed. that would be the end of most.

So you disagree with Trump's plan to prop us the cruise lines.

And is that a bad thing?   It is not like the people spending the money on the cruises would not spend it on other things.

This is a circular argument but I don't understand how folks can suggest that infection rates are orders of magnitude higher than being reported but insist that mortality rates haven't changed.

Mortality rates at 40x bigger than being reported, then, and there we are.

We know the Russians have been hiding COVID deaths by not classifying them as such.

Then those companies would ask that the lawmakers, PMs and presidents, not keep their own wealth in offshore accounts hidden from their own tax agencies.

It’s a no-go.

Know it all.
