According to the most recent job numbers from Statistics Canada, as of the end of January, Canada's economy had 858,000 fewer jobs than it did before the pandemic. But those losses are not being borne evenly across the board.

Women — especially ones who weren't earning much to begin with — are bearing the brunt of the job losses, as they made up a majority of the work force in hard-hit sectors like hospitality, retail and food.

According to a new analysis by RBC published Thursday, nearly 100,000 working-age Canadian women have completely left the workforce since the pandemic started, which means they aren't even trying to get a job any more. The figure for men is more than 10 times smaller — a sign that on the whole, they are not feeling quite so gloomy about their prospects.

While some parts of the economy are reopening, public-facing, high-contact jobs — like those in the hotel industry — are still languishing, or at the very least trying to change the way they operate on the fly. That often means running with fewer staff, and the longer that goes on, the more likely it is those jobs are gone forever, according to Dawn Desjardins, one of the authors of the RBC report.

"The longer these women are out of the labour force, the greater the risk of skills erosion, which could potentially hamper their ability to get rehired or to transition to different roles as the economy evolves," the report says.

WEDNESDAY, March 3, 2021 (HealthDay News) -- A new study provides further evidence that people with certain blood types may be more likely to contract COVID-19.

Specifically, it found that the new coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) is particularly attracted to the blood group A antigen found on respiratory cells.

The researchers focused on a protein on the surface of the SARS-CoV-2 virus called the receptor binding domain (RBD), which is the part of the virus that attaches to the host cells. That makes it an important target for scientists trying to learn how the virus infects people.

In this laboratory study, the team assessed how the SARS-CoV-2 RBD interacted with respiratory and red blood cells in A, B and O blood types.

The results showed that the SARS-CoV-2 RBD had a strong preference for binding to blood group A found on respiratory cells, but had no preference for blood group A red blood cells, or other blood groups found on respiratory or red cells.

The SARS-CoV-2 RBD's preference to recognize and attach to the blood type A antigen found in the lungs of people with blood type A may provide insight into the potential link between blood group A and COVID-19 infection, according to the authors of the study. It was published March 3 in the journal Blood Advances.

"It is interesting that the viral RBD only really prefers the type of blood group A antigens that are on respiratory cells, which are presumably how the virus is entering most patients and infecting them," said study author Dr. Sean Stowell, from Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston.

TOKYO: Overseas spectators are likely to be shut out from the Tokyo Olympics, Japanese media reported on Thursday (Mar 4), after organisers said that public safety would be the "top priority" at the COVID-19-delayed Games.

The Japanese government, Tokyo metropolitan government and Tokyo 2020 organising committee are leaning towards holding the massive event in front of a domestic audience only, the Yomiuri Shimbun and other outlets said.

Officials fear that an influx of visitors from abroad will endanger the Japanese public.

"As the spread of coronavirus continues in every country, they have decided that allowing visitors from overseas on a large scale will only make people anxious," the Yomiuri report said.

The three parties met with International Olympic Committee (IOC) and International Paralympic Committee (IPC) heads on Wednesday and agreed to take a decision on spectators by the end of the month, ideally before the nationwide torch relay begins on Mar 25.

A restaurant owner surnamed Xie from Beijing's Daxing district has been sentenced to eight months in prison and one year probation for breaking COVID-19 quarantine rules, a court announced on Wednesday, prompting Chinese netizens to complain that the verdict was "not enough."

Xie, a frequent visitor to Xinfadi market, where the COVID-19 outbreak in Beijing started, was required to stay at home on June 15 last year, but he ignored the order and visited public venues such as restaurants and markets.

He also concealed his visits to the market during an epidemiological investigation.

Xie was later diagnosed with COVID-19 on June 24, resulting in 60 people he came into contact with having to go into quarantine, and the apartment building where he lived being sealed off, according to Beijing Daily on Wednesday.

looks like dealing with this pandemic is good for business

The annual report found a surge in wealthy billionaires in China amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, mainly in food and beverage as well as emerging technologies, and a major stock rally in 2020.

China has topped the United States in 2020 as the nation with more dollar-denominated billionaires, a Hurun Global Rich List 2021 report found this week.

China had 1,058 billionaires compared to the 696 in the US, the report said, adding that 318 of the 610 new billionaires were in China compared to 95 in the US.

The Asian country also had six out of ten of the world's largest cities for multi-billionaires, with Beijing ranking first on the list for the sixth consecutive year at 145 tycoons, Shanghai at second with 113, Shenzhen ranking fourth at 105 people and Hong Kong at fifth with 82, the report said. Shanghai beat New York, who had 112 billionaires.

Senate Republicans on Wednesday suggested they are planning to force the chamber’s clerks to fully read Democrats’ $1.9 trillion COVID-19 relief bill — a stalling tactic that could take by some estimates up to 10 hours, delaying the vote.

Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) said he will request a reading of the legislation and that another Republican senator has been briefed on it, according to a Hill pool report.

Johnson later Wednesday told a Wisconsin radio station that he may attempt to drag the process out into the weekend by offering amendments, on the condition that another senator seconds him.

The senator, according to CNN, added that he will force the Senate clerks to read the Senate Democrats’ bill.

Morley told Chief Justice Christopher Hinkson that based on real-time and projected epidemiological data, Henry believed accelerating cases constituted a health hazard, allowing her to issue orders that she acknowledged may affect charter rights reasonably and proportionally.

However, Hinkson questioned whether Henry fully appreciated the right to religious freedom based on Morley’s description of her statements related to the orders first issued last November and updated in December.

“She talks about needs of persons to attend in-person religious services, but that really wouldn’t capture the charter right that’s asserted by the petitioners … would it?” he asked.

“What she was obliged to do, surely, was to weigh the rights of persons, not their needs.”

Word on the street is that Henry has been told she is lifting the most current set of restrictions when the current order expires in April. Even if infections and case load are still high we will be told that the vaccine has set us on the right path now.

Lets see.

‘My Aunt Chippy smokes that in a day.’ NC mocked over 100 cigarettes vaccine rule

North Carolina was following federal guidelines when state health officials announced this week they would expand COVID-19 vaccine eligibility to anyone who has smoked at least 100 cigarettes in their lifetime.

But that hasn’t stopped late-night talk show hosts and Twitter users from ridiculing the so-called Tobacco state.

“So that’s like, what, everyone?” late night host Jimmy Kimmel said Tuesday on “Jimmy Kimmel Live.” “That’s five packs of cigarettes, 100. My Aunt Chippy smokes that in a day.”

Ha, everyone has an Aunt Chippy.

Meanwhile, I'm concerned about the US numbers. It shows a plateau or possibly a small rise.

i think it's likely statistically impossible for the US to go back up to their january numbers for either cases or deaths.  they withstood that wave so it's very likely the worst is over now forever for the US.

still going down i think.

canada will be down again today in both cases and deaths.

Seattle Times:     Gov. Inslee: Law enforcement, firefighters, grocery workers to get COVID-19 vaccine in March

Law enforcement, firefighters, grocery workers and others will be eligible for COVID-19 vaccines beginning around March 22, according to Gov. Jay Inslee. The new timelines — which are still tentative — nonetheless put some specifics to a vaccination plan that is picking up speed after a slow start.

the vaccine is optional, dasmo.  millions will refuse it just in this country.  kids might never be offered it.  i don't know how you can ask for much more than that.

Alberta will expand its COVID-19 vaccine rollout to include people under age 75 starting March 15, and if shipments arrive as scheduled, all adults in the province will receive their first dose by the end of June, the health minister says.

"By June 30, we expect to have offered every single adult in the province at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine," Health Minister Tyler Shandro said Thursday at a news conference.

_______________________

Alberta will soon begin using the AstraZeneca-Oxford vaccine, the minister said, and plans to offer the first 58,500 doses of that vaccine only to healthy adults aged 64 and under starting on March 10.

"These Albertans will have a choice," Shandro said. "They can book an appointment now for the AstraZeneca or they can wait to receive the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine when Phase 2D begins in early May.

The largest experiment on humankind ever conducted. Even if it turns out well, it's a crime.

WUT? You're considering making vaccines to stop the spread before all side effects on health are known an experiment?

What about when companies started making tobacco?

Or using internal combustion engines for transportation?

Or...well, pretty much anything else that has potential but not fully-understood side effects when first released?

How many people has the covid vaccine killed?

How many have cars killed?
