Island pharmacies are now taking appointments for those age 55 to 65 to get the AstraZeneca vaccine: https://www.bcpharma...ation-locations

For some reason this isn't on Island Health's website yet, but I expect Bonnie Henry will mention it at 3pm.

It's easy to sign up through the websites of pharmacy chains like Pharmasave (https://pharmasave.c...ritish-columbia) or Shoppers Drug Mart (https://covid-19.sho...sdrugmart.ca/en). I just got booked for next Wednesday at Pharmasave.

There's no in person press briefing today, the next one is Monday.

Must be over 1,300 infections today then!

In person briefings have been twice a week for the last several months. Infection/vaccination data will be released this afternoon in a written statement.

What is it about the AZ vaccine that concerns you for people in the 55-65 age range?

Ineffective against some variants. If Dr BH gave us variant information then we would know the potential impact.

https://www.webmd.co...in South Africa.

Bottom line is that Pfizer and Moderna are better options. Why take the chance.

Just pointing out that the written statements seem to correlate with dates of highest infection counts. We will soon find out if I am right.

Why not take them both? AZ now. One of the others when they become available.

Being vaccinated at this point shouldn’t matter, restrictions still apply to everyone.

Having said that, I wonder if all of the actors and crews coming to BC from the US isolate for 14 days?! They certainly don’t social distance!

on the whole they are pretty young people. their death rate if they catch it is extremely low.

The risk of problems with AZ is small, about 1 in 250,000, and it's been quite effective in the UK.

Sure, I could wait for Pfizer or Moderna. But more variants are coming, and I suspect even the folks who get those shots will need boosters.

Besides, when it becomes your turn, you're not going to have a choice. What are you going to do, see Johnson & Johnson on the vial and leave the room?

surely they do not summon you for an unknown treatment? you get to know in advance what it is.

and of course you can back out. consent can be revoked at any time.

and no you do not lose your spot in the line for others.

it is estimated that up to 15,000 people per day are not arriving for their appointment.

The press briefings are scheduled in advance. If you watch them, Dix outlines the schedule for the next few briefings at the beginning of each one. There's no correlation, unless it's random. In fact, yesterday corresponded with one of the (the?) highest new case days.

They are quite effective at reducing severe illness/hospitalization/death, regardless of the variant.

They are also more effective than not taking a vaccine. Currently there is no other vaccine available for that age group.

Every medical expert is suggesting that the most effective path is to take the vaccine that's available to you as soon as it's available to you. What do you know that they don't?
