Pub owners and staff in England are preparing for the reopening of outdoor hospitality on April 12. The landlady of the Crown Inn in Yorkshire says she has ordered more beer and is "praying for fine weather." Prime Minister Boris Johnson confirmed earlier that from April 12, non-essential retail, gyms, hairdressers and outdoor hospitality will reopen in England.

COVID-19 vaccination registration available for British Columbians over 60 years old

Starting today, people over the age of 60 can register for a COVID vaccine. If you were born in or before 1961, you can register online, through the phone or in person. This runs parallel to the pharmacy program, which sees people aged 55 to 65 eligible to get an AstraZeneca vaccine in local pharmacies.

Easy peasy, took < 5 minutes to register online. Still uncertain what I'll opt to do if I show up and they offer up the AZ option. Friends in Vancouver today got the Moderna vaccine and were practically celebrating, lucky SOB's. I know a lot of folks in the same quandary re: AZ. It'll be interesting for sure. Anyway onward and upward.....

Third wave of COVID-19 crashes over Vancouver Island

Rise of variants was predictable, expert says

After escaping the brunt of COVID-19 illnesses and fatalities for most of last year, the third wave of the pandemic is now starting to strain public health workers in the Island Health region.

Public health leaders on Vancouver Island say they expect case numbers to keep rising, due to an influx of travellers from the Lower Mainland over Easter long weekend, among other factors.

The Island has seen cases skyrocket from what has been a consistently low number throughout the pandemic.

“We continue to be at almost 70 [cases] a day rate, which is literally triple of what we were seeing 10 days ago,” said Island Health Chief Medical Health Officer, Dr. Richard Stanwick, in an interview with Capital Daily.

The Vancouver Canucks are expected to return to the ice Sunday, nearly two weeks after a COVID-19 outbreak swept through the team.

The NHL said the Canucks can reopen their facilities Sunday pending the results of Saturday's tests. If Vancouver gets a clean bill of health, it will host the Edmonton Oilers on Friday.

Athletes at the Tokyo Olympics who come down with minor symptoms of COVID-19 could be isolated in a hotel lined up by local organizers of the games.

The Japanese news agency Kyodo on Sunday said organizers are working to secure 300 rooms in a hotel near the Athletes' Village. The agency cited unnamed officials with "knowledge of the plan."

The rooms would be for athletes and staff who do not need to be hospitalized. The measures underline the risk of trying to hold the Olympics and Paralympics during a pandemic.

The Olympics are to open on July 23 and face strong opposition from up to 80% of Japanese polled. The Olympics and Paralympics will involve about 15,000 athletes from more than 200 nations and territories, and tens of thousands of other officials, judges, administrators, media and broadcasters.

I am just assuming that it is going to be another Covid summer this year, Probably has less impact on me than a lot of people.

I am finding that I am spending more time in the gym and eating better than before so there are some positives. Also looking forward to getting out on a few lakes with the canoe.

Just talked to a buddy who got the first A-Z shot yesterday. He's flat on his butt today with flu like symptoms, lol. I'll take AZ if I have to but won't be thrilled. Also more interestingly I talked to my neighbor this morning who is a naval officer....the CAF has ensured that all military members across the country are to get the Moderna jab. Interesting.

A large gathering is underway in Montreal's Old Port on Sunday evening, despite the city's earlier curfew now being in effect.

As of Sunday evening, curfew begins at 8 p.m. rather than 9:30 p.m. in Quebec's red zones. The change was announced earlier in the week by Premier Francois Legault, who said it was a preventive measure in anticipation of an explosion of COVID-19 cases due to the virus' variants.

More than 100 passengers arriving at Vancouver International Airport have refused to quarantine at a government-authorized hotel since the “mandatory” three-day quarantine was introduced on Feb. 22.

Jarbeau said that over the past six weeks at least 50 people a day had arrived at Canada’s border and tested positive for the coronavirus.

Between Feb. 22 and April 6, almost 176,000 travellers by air and land across Canada were tested for COVID upon arrival. Of those, 2,282 tested positive for COVID-19, a positivity rate of 1.3 per cent, Jarbeau said.

“On average, this is the equivalent of having one person with COVID-19 on every single 100-passenger flight arriving in Canada,” she said.

That works out to about 50 COVID-positive travellers arriving in Canada every day on the 44 days between Feb. 22 and April 6.

By 9:45, the crowd had been dispered, leaving widespread damage in their wake.

But in updated surface cleaning guidelines, the CDC says the risk for contracting the virus from a contaminated surface is less than 1 in 10,000, The New York Times reported.

"People can be affected with the virus that causes COVID-19 through contact with contaminated surfaces and objects," CDC Director Rochelle Walensky, M.D., said at a White House briefing on Monday. "However, evidence has demonstrated that the risk by this route of infection of transmission is actually low."

"Finally," Linsey Marr, Ph.D., an airborne virus expert at Virginia Tech, told The Times. "We've known this for a long time, and yet people are still focusing so much on surface cleaning." Marr added that there is "really no evidence that anyone has ever gotten COVID-19 by touching a contaminated surface."

^Great, I can go back to licking grocery cart handles like old times.

Still interesting that Coca Cola managed to vaccinate its workers last month, and our military only now.
