If we want to ease hospital admissions we probably should do the second dose for the over sixty crowd before most of the twenty and thirty group.

wow

To be in Brazil right now feels like being trapped in the middle of a chaotic battlefield, a 14-month-long siege, without anyone in charge on your side of the trenches. Totally surrounded by a lethal enemy that keeps getting closer to you and your family. This biological foe keeps morphing in a way that seems well adapted to infect everyone within reach, showing mercy neither for pregnant women nor for their newborn babies.

After 12 months of such a brutal biological warfare, more than 390,000 Brazilians have perished; the number of fatalities climbed to more than 4,000 fatalities a day in early April, and the number of new cases per day edged above 100,000, filling hospitals to capacity with tens of thousands of terminally ill patients who occupy all available ICU beds in a country that has one of the largest national public health systems in the world and more hospitals than the U.S. Such a steady tsunami of severely sick patients has led to an unprecedented collapse of the entire country’s health system and the setting of yet another pair of world records in terms of both infected and deceased health professionals. On top of that, the country’s stock of medical equipment and the supplies required to intubate patients in need of respirators to survive are running at a historic low and may run out completely because the federal government simply failed in the process of replenishing the national stockpile several months ago.

This, in a nutshell, is the catastrophic and unprecedented hecatomb that Brazil found itself locked in by mid-April 2021. A devastating second wave of the pandemic began to engulf all five regions of the country back in early November 2020. It resulted, in part, from the premature and chaotic relaxation of social isolation measures that had helped at least some regions of the country contain the worst of the initial phase of the pandemic. It worsened because of the large public political rallies that preceded the two rounds of the 2020 national elections, generating a multitude of superspreader events all over the country. And the situation was exacerbated by Christmas and Carnaval, the largest national festivity.

*snip*

More than 1,600 babies have died so far because they were born prematurely or because they were born with COVID and died of later complications, a rate 10 to 20 times more than in the U.S. and the U.K. And if there was any doubt left that the pandemic has led to profound structural changes in Brazilian society, one has only to mention that it is very likely that, for the first time since reliable records have been kept, Brazil may soon register more monthly deaths than births. Dropping from an excess of approximately 126,000 more births than deaths per month in 2019, this number reduced to an average 96,000 more monthly births than deaths in 2020.

In March of 2021, this surplus dwindled to only 46,000, but in states like Rio Grande Sul and cities such as Rio de Janeiro deaths have already surpassed births. The rest of the country may soon follow this alarming shift. The number of daily deaths is now so overwhelming that even São Paulo’s numerous cemeteries and crematories are struggling with the dramatic increase in demand, raising the question of whether the country may not be able to handle the bodies of pandemic victims properly if the situation continues to deteriorate.

In the middle of all the horror and suffering triggered by this still-unfolding human tragedy, the federal government and, in particular, the president of Brazil, has done virtually nothing to mitigate the situation.  Rather, the opposite has occurred: President Jair Bolsonaro voluntarily played the part of the virus’s best ally on many occasions. Bolsonaro has defended the use of preventive medications, such as hydroxychloroquine, which do not work against COVID. He has campaigned feverishly, even filing a petition to the Supreme Court, against any form of social isolation, or the widespread use of masks, and he has spectacularly fumbled key attempts to procure the tens of millions of vaccine doses that Brazil needs.

TOKYO: An online petition calling for the Tokyo Olympics to be cancelled has garnered almost 200,000 signatures in the past few days, as public concerns mount over holding the Games in a pandemic.

With less than three months to go before the start of the summer Olympics, already postponed for a year due to COVID-19, questions still remain over how Tokyo can hold the global event and keep volunteers, athletes, officials and the Japanese public safe from the coronavirus.

In two days since its launch, an online campaign called Stop Tokyo Olympics has gathered more than 187,000 signatures, nearing its 200,000 goal and underscoring public concerns over holding the massive sporting event in Japan's capital.

Battling a fourth wave of the pandemic and struggling with a sluggish vaccination campaign, the Japanese government is seeking to extend states of emergency in Tokyo and three other areas until the end of May, the economy minister said on Friday (May 7).

TOKYO: A COVID-19 state of emergency in Tokyo and other parts of Japan was extended on Friday (May 7), less than three months before the Olympics, with restrictions also imposed in two more regions as infections surge.

The emergency measures, less strict than blanket lockdowns in other countries, had been due to end on May 11 but will now continue until the end of the month, Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga said.

"The number of new virus cases is at a high level in major cities, while hospitals continue to be overwhelmed in Osaka and Hyogo prefectures," Suga said.

"Based on this situation, we decided to add Aichi and Fukuoka to the areas under the state of emergency and to extend it until May 31."

Japan's COVID-19 outbreak remains much smaller than in many countries, with just over 10,500 deaths.

KATHMANDU: Across the border from a devastating surge in India, doctors in Nepal warned Friday (May 7) of a major crisis as daily COVID-19 cases hit a record and hospitals were running out of beds and oxygen.

Nepal reported 9,070 new confirmed cases on Thursday, compared to 298 a month ago. The number of fatalities also reached its highest with 58 on Wednesday and 54 on Thursday, for a total of 3,529.

SINGAPORE: The Singapore Police Force (SPF) alerted the public on Friday (May 7) to a new type of scam where scammers use compromised WhatsApp accounts to solicit donations for the purchase of oxygen concentrator machines to be sent to India.

In such cases, the scammers would communicate with the victims using compromised WhatsApp accounts belonging to the victims' friends, said SPF in a news release.

They would claim to be raising funds to purchase oxygen concentrator machines for donation to India, which is currently facing a surge in COVID-19 infections.

Scammers would request for the victims to assist with the purchase or to donate to patients in India who are critically ill and in need of life-saving oxygen.

"The scammers would emphasise the urgency of the issue and provide the victims with a bank account number for fund transfer, claiming that the bank account belonged to a supplier," said the police.

Earlier, the Biden administration came out in full support of waiving the intellectual property protections for COVID-19 vaccines, effectively siding with an international initiative to bolster vaccine production. The waiver proposal is currently making its way through the World Trade Organization (WTO).

Taking a stance against the US’ recent decision to support waiving patent protections for COVID-19 vaccines, Germany recently blasted the move and warned that the effort would create issues for future vaccine production.

A spokesperson for the German government told Bloomberg on Thursday that the waiver would create “severe complications” when it comes to producing new vaccines, highlighting growing concern that the proposal would ultimately prompt a loss in incentive for the industry and set a dangerous precedent moving forward.

Supporters of the waiver proposal have argued that it will help to increase the production of vaccines and see a spike in delivering life-saving jabs to developing nations. The proposal was initially put forth by South Africa and India, two countries that have been undergoing devastating surges in COVID-19 cases.

Russian scientists and President Vladimir Putin raised objections Thursday after an annual vaccine conference named Moderna’s coronavirus jab the best in the world.

The U.S. pharmaceutical giant’s jab was recognized as the world’s best Covid-19 vaccine at the annual World Vaccine Congress earlier in the day, edging out competitors including Pfizer-BioNTech and Russia’s Sputnik V.

Putin, speaking at a televised video conference with an official who heads the national coronavirus response, questioned the congress’ selection as premature.

“I understand that world markets have decided to support the American vaccine Moderna, which is competing aggressively with another American-European company Pfizer,” Putin said.

“Our colleagues abroad say that this will be a completely innovative, very modern drug,” he was quoted by the state-run TASS news agency as saying. “However, whether this will actually be the case will only be clear 10 years after application and analysis of the results.”

As comes the recovery, so does inflation.

The gradual reopening of the US economy is quickly lifting consumer demand as Americans rush to revive their pre-pandemic habits. The surge in spending has already pushed popular gauges of inflation higher, but experts see price growth accelerating further as the recovery continues.

Debates over how inflation trends over the next year split economists into two camps. One group — which includes Republicans and even moderate Democrats like former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers — fears the latest stimulus package and strong demand will spark rampant and dangerous price growth. The other sees higher inflation fading as the economy settles into a new sense of normal.

Nobel prize-winning economist Paul Krugman sits squarely in the latter group, but he told Insider he's still keeping an eye out for a potential inflation shock.

"Both sides are predicting the stuff that we're seeing now," he told Insider. "Anyone who wasn't expecting to see some prices of some things rise as the economy came roaring out of the pandemic wasn't paying attention," he said.

It's too early to say whether either side of the inflation debate is right, he said. Bottlenecks and supply-chain issues are behind some rising inflation gauges, but it remains to be seen whether those effects subside or give way to broad and concerning price growth.

COVID-19: Leaked reports show B.C. health authorities withholding data from the public

B.C. doesn’t make anywhere near the same level of detail available to the public as other provinces

A pair of internal reports leaked from the B.C. Centre for Disease Control highlights that health authorities in B.C. are only releasing a fraction of their available COVID-19 information to the public.

The internal reports — each of which runs over 45 pages — are four times longer than the weekly reports published by the Centre. They delve into the details of COVID-19 case counts and vaccinations at the neighbourhood level, breakdowns about variants of concern, and more.

The reports include neighbourhood-level information on case and vaccination counts, for example, a level of detail the Centre has so far refused to make public despite repeated calls from academics and researchers. The city of Toronto regularly publishes neighbourhood-level case and vaccination data, as well as breakdowns by age, income and ethnicity.

According to the documents, the Westshore has been leading south Island cases. Between April 23-29, the View Royal and Highlands segment’s average daily rate per 100,000 people rose to between 20.1-40. Nearby Colwood and west-Saanich segments were at 5.1-10. Oak Bay and North Saanich’s average rates were 0 during that week, while the majority of the region was 0.1-5 per 100,000 people.

1. Canada vaccinated over 400000 people yesterday (technically 400,489, or ~1% of pop).

2. Over 40% of adults have received at least a single dose.

3. We are ranked 3rd of G20 countries for % of population who received at least 1 dose.

Government's reasons for withholding these detailed data are to protect privacy, deter panic and discourage complacency in low-outbreak regions.

But I think the value in knowing outweighs any perceived risk of having "too much" information.

Yet it raises as many questions as it answers. Is Westshore high because they're careless and Oak Bay is disciplined? It's likely more complicated: Oak Bay residents are older and wealthier, they have the ability to stay at home more than a busy young Westshore family.
