Nparker, glad you enjoyed but do consider breakfast at the Eyrie. It really is one of the best meals that my wife and I have had on the island. Consider it as an addition.

For families with a more limited budget I still recommend visiting the Eyrie over the skywalk if you are picking just one.

I suppose I consider a meal at the Eyrie and a visit to the Skywalk as two very separate and different experiences. Not sure one is really a substitute for the other. As locals, we're lucky to have both options easily available to us.

I understand perfectly that the "outdoors" is not everyone's thing; personally I will always choose that option if it presents itself, regardless of cost, which is why our family immensely enjoyed our visit to the Skywalk, and why we'll go again. More to the point its different and new and we hadn't experienced it before, unlike the Aerie/Eyrie. For us that was more than very good value for the buck.

I do concur however if budget is a consideration then one might have to reconsider the Skywalk as there are certainly less expensive options out there. All depends of course on your preference(s) and tastes.

Ascending the actual Skywalk itself quite aside, I'll personally always take an opportunity to enjoy a brisk walk quite literally in and through a glorious pristine forest, an elevated trekking experience at that, making it even more special. Regardless of cost, because that experience represents good value to me. "Value for money" of course does ultimately depend on the individual.

Some folks for sure prefer rather a more intimate and pampered experience be it a meal or lodging, for others a meal cooked over an open fire and a 2-man tent perched in the middle of the wilderness is just the ticket. I'm definitely in the latter camp. Never been to the Aerie/Villa Eyrie for breakfast although I have very much enjoyed dinner there on a couple of occasions. Breakfast there however_must be a good deal because I don't ever recall dinner there being especially friendly to my wallet :).

Regardless Vive la difference and enjoy whatever activity floats your boat! Especially if budget is not a consideration I'd recommend doing the Skywalk at least once - if nothing else its great exercise: the 1500 meter walk there and back in addition to the effort to ascend the ten storey structure will work off some of that 'covid tummy'. At least that's what I kept telling myself.....

Allseeing  In that case you should try the Kinsel trestle which is a lovely walk through woods from the parking lot and there is about ten floors of stairs down to the creek bed and a wonderful nature trail by the creek. It is a rather magical place.

For those of you on a budget you will be pleased that there is absolutely no cost.

And you can have a wonderful lunch under the bridge, too.

For the ultimate low budget experience you can always drive past the MSW and visit the free scenic lookout a KM further along the road and get a similar view!

For those of us seniors who are challenged by stairs you can also have a lunch you bring at the top of the trestle which I have done recently.

My point is that for many young families of four spending a hundred dollars (95 plus tax) is a lot of money when there are other alternatives that provide better value.

If budget is not an issue or if you are not naturally frugal then enjoy.

It's true, there are some great viewpoints along the Malahat. The Skywalk is a novelty for tourists more than locals, but I can see what the appeal would be to removed from the din of the highway and a little closer to the water.

It’s the cost for a family that turns me way off the Skywalk

Given that the taxpayer paid for the whole thing you would think that we would get a bit of a break!

As a taxpayer I have paid far more and received much less in return than this project supplies. I'm fine with the Skywalk expenditure, although some sort of local resident discount would be nice.

Also I believe this was an initiative/partnership with the FN and I am more than happy to support that. Very likely it also provides some employment options for FN members which is also a good thing. If you want to complain about 'waste' and taxpayers getting bent right over you can look no further than the DND procurement process which has been soaking taxpayers for decades to the tune of billions and billions....and billions....of dollars. Mostly with no decent or reasonable return.

I would have hoped that they would have had a local appreciation day or two in the off season were prices were next to free for a couple of days. Or maybe a familly day in Feb. Five bucks gets the family in for locals once or twice a year would go a long way to making people feel better about their tax dollars benifiting only a few people.

Yup good suggestions all of them; and yes if you have mobility concerns or issues it can be a bit of a slog 'there and back' along the elevated walkway.

The layout is very good with patios/chairs on the actual Skywalk end of the walkway so if you're tired - or simply want to sit down and enjoy the view or soak in some rays - you can do all that; in addition there is a well designed children's play area as well as a small cafe where you can get snacks or drinks. I ?assume? too that at some point in the late fall/winter it will shut down due to inclement weather.

Well, then there is the gun buyback program that has spent $117M so far, and hasn't bought back one gun.

Life's a journey......so roll down the window and enjoy the breeze.

On the Street: New trustees on library board, Nanaimo Airport receives new certification

Former general manager of Eagle Wing Tours moves to Malahat Skywalk

Nathan Bird has been named general manager of the Malahat Skywalk attraction. Bird brings decades of tourism experience to the 10-storey viewing tower. It has attracted more than 550,000 visitors since opening in 2021 on the traditional territory of the Malahat First Nation.

In his new role, Bird will be responsible for the company’s overall strategic direction and day-to-day operations.

“I’m excited for this new opportunity and to help guide the company into its next phase of growth,” said Bird. “With the attraction entering its fourth year of operations, we’re in a unique position to further build and elevate the Malahat SkyWalk experience and showcase all that it has to offer for locals and visitors across the globe.”
