🚔Summary of Policing Costs for Public Rallies, Marches, Demonstrations and Protests🚔

Victoria, BC – In response to public and media requests, the Victoria Police Department is releasing a summary of costs that the department has incurred relating to public rallies, marches, demonstrations and protests since 2019.

VicPD ensures public safety at many public rallies, marches, demonstrations and protests each year and our approach is determined by past events, organizers’ intentions, and the actions of participants. In an effort to ensure that participants and others are kept safe at these events, officers monitor the events from a public safety perspective, interact with organizers through our community liaison officers, provide traffic control on roads, bridges and intersections and escort participants during events on public roadways to ensure the safety of all involved.

Whenever possible, on-duty resources are used to provide public safety. However, if the size and complexity of an event requires it, additional officers will be deployed on overtime to ensure public safety.

Below is a list of the number of public rallies, marches, demonstrations and protests in VicPD’s jurisdiction as well as associated overtime costs for 2019 and 2020 (up to and including March 5th, which reflects the most current data available). For events that span a number of days, each day is counted as an event.

🔹2019
Number of public rallies, marches, demonstrations and protests: 40
Overtime costs: $82,765

🔹2020 (through March 5th)
Number of public rallies, marches, demonstrations and protests: 34
Overtime costs: $183,037

These costs are not exhaustive as they only reflect VicPD overtime costs. They do not account for the costs associated with officers and staff whose daily work included public order-related tasks. They also do not account for overtime costs related to any of our partner agencies who assist VicPD through the Integrated Public Safety Unit.

Jesus though, more than twice the previous year's cost in just the first 2 months.

Much of the extra cost was of course aided and abetted by Isitt and his minions, ironically, since they are always pretending we need to reduce police presence.

Not comforting that, with downtown reportedly degenerating daily, VicPD has already had to waste a bunch of funds that might be used to maintain at least a veneer of public safety.

Agreed, please forward the bill to Isitt and his fan club to cover

So the hereditary chiefs agree to a new agreement with the Province on rights and title but now the elected chiefs oppose it!

If the police know that it's going to happen then they have ample warning to not allow it to happen, right? Isn't that what police are for? Preventing illegal behaviour?

I wonder if enough people are annoyed about this behaviour that we could get together and shut down the highway to protest highway shutdowns.

Would police dedicate extra resources at no cost and perform free traffic control for that effort? I wonder..

Or we could shut down the roads into the reserve on Mount Newton. That should be equally acceptable, right?

So the police didn't do their job and stop the highway closure that they knew was going to happen..... why do we pay them again? The highway on-ramps were blocked by Public Works employees with construction warning signs placed all over the roads leading to the highways... at least they were doing something even though it's likely not in their job description to aid law-breakers.

Why do we allow this to happen again? White guilt, is it? I harbor no personal guilt so get off of the damn highway.

A new “learn” section on the WSANEC Leadership Council’s website aims to give locals more information about Indigenous territories that make up part of Greater Victoria and better support the journey to reconciliation.

The page provides settler residents with access to a map of Indigenous territories where they live and work, how to do land and territorial acknowledgments, how to pronounce the name of First Nations and the languages they speak. It also offers a reading list where people can educate themselves further on Indigenous issues.

__________________

The page includes links to educational videos and readings on Indigenous and WSANEC histories. There are also links where people can donate to local organizations and projects in the WSANEC territory, such as the Tsawout Big House and the Tseycum Childcare and Wellness Centre.

I might be interested in this, except I am not a settler, I was born here.

Anyone interested in FN issues at all should follow Jared Williams (Cowichan) and Rich Francis (Six Nations) on whatever SM platform you choose. Two very compelling teachers, and very good at what they do.

Same here. That word carries stigma for many of their intended audience, and while intentions are good, its use might not help their cause right now.

Maybe they can reclaim agency of that problematic word by providing a definition?

Otherwise many could be left wondering "what is a settler?" "am I a settler?"

Unless one sprouted up from the very soil of the North American continent itself, at one time or another everyone was a settler.
