I spent a number of years in my youth at the track.

That's me with my ass on the ground.

Tonight I saw the most awesome video about Western Speedway and one driver that was hell bent on proving something.

Yes it's on Youtube and yes it is way too long...but it was perfectly shot, edited. and produced by M1 studios here in Victoria.

Pace yourself but do yourself a favour. Watch it. Fantastic Video.

With the buyer still shrouded in mystery, the Western Speedway and the 81 acres it sits upon are officially up for rezoning.

In a meeting notice issued to Langford residents, the city announced an application for rezoning has been submitted for the 2207 Millstream Rd. property. However, neither city councillors nor staff members were able to confirm the identity of the applicant.

The application does state an intent to rezone the property from commercial recreation to residential small lot 1 on the south side of Millstream Road and business park 9 on the north side, where the Western Speedway is located. Residential small lot zoning allows for single-family dwellings. Business park 9 zoning has not been defined in the city’s latest zoning bylaw document, but business parks generally indicate an area for light industrial and commercial uses.

Established in 1954, the Western Speedway is Western Canada’s oldest speedway and has hosted numerous NASCAR and CASCAR series. Although the future of the speedway hasn’t been sealed, councillor Matt Sahlstrom – who managed the speedway for 8 years – says the writing is on the wall.

“It’s been dying a slow death the last 15 years,” he explained.

I'm continually amazed by how secretive development is in Langford. Elsewhere, it's not uncommon to have the name and contact information of the applicant published on a sign in front of the property.

After the CoV clown show in making housing unaffordable, can anyone blame them?

We just have to wait for the application documents to be posted.

Know it all.

I wonder if EV adoption will bring an eventual revival of the motorsport hobby. It's really a ton of fun to drive fast - I think most people would really enjoy it if they had a chance to try it.

The noise and smells of fossil fuel-powered motorsport are probably hard for most victorians to stomach these days. But if a facility were EV-only, it's hard to imagine why it couldn't exist close to town...

I've watched a bit of electric racing and it's interesting. Admittedly the whines of electric motors is a poor replacement for the roar of a high performance engine, but in other respects EVs are great for racing. Low center of gravity, less parts to maintain, instant torque and acceleration...

As someone whose townhouse looks across the millstream "valley" to the racetrack, I'd prefer the EVs in the summer...
