Twenty months into the pandemic, more than four million Canadians continue to work from home, despite significant gains in vaccination coverage and efforts to diminish the spread of the coronavirus across the country.
Simply put, the virus is still here and these workers are still not back in the office.
It's a reality that most organizations probably hoped would not be the case this far into the COVID-19 era.

Some workers yes but the reality is that career progression stalls when you are working from home while your co-workers socialize with the execs in the office.

Potentially yes, but also some will enjoy it an find other work that allows them to continue. There is a little bit of a reset for sure and a shuffle, some have started their own business or finding other work as positions open up. So many variables certainly but lots of opportunities.

Maybe some that used to commute 2 hours a day will use some of that time for more work productivity and outshine those going into the office, when their work is evaluated side by side.

There are far too many variables to know how the labour market will exit on the other end. There are people who no doubt are going to find their work from home allows them to pursue their employment with vigour, as the kids are taken care of, there's no rush to get out of the house in the AM, no stress in PM rush traffic, there's time to take the kid for a swimming class after school, etc. It's life changing for people.

You mean working less and taking care of home duties more? Yeah people like that. I've notice the opposite of positive productivity from those at home personally.. Other distractions I would assume...
edit: This would be for someone working on an hourly wage or salary... I would say for piece work or paid on production another way then perhaps there is an increase or at least an even production..

Are deadlines being met, though? If they're not, the boss has to figure out a way forward. If they are, what's the big deal?

Its called work life balance. There is absolutely no reason to have all these people congest the road ways , transmit covid-19 to all their co-workers when they can get the same accomplishments done from home in a much more timely manner.
It makes perfect sense to keep people working from home.

So the bare minimum? I know what you mean, I just think in the work environment/office I suppose has people working and discussing etc. It's more conducive to get things done, above and beyond what the deadlines dictate. It's not about the piece work but getting more done.

On the other hand people say they are constantly disrupted at the work place and have to attend meetings that accomplish little but waste time.
It’s really going to come down to individual needs, individual work ethic, etc.
yes disrupted by other work that might need to get done that doesn't have a definitive deadline lol... Meetings still happen whether at the office or not...

If you are pushing paper, you should be working from home.
Auto cad, Docusign, PDF"s, Word Docs, Email, Cell phones.
I find it absolutely ludicrous people are being forced back into the office in the middle of the fourth wave.
What about Net Zero, Climate change, agenda 2030?
Or is that just a lie too?
Get people off the road.
If they have the means to accomplish the workload from home...Let them do so.
Even a monkey would agree.

Monkeys still forced to pick coconuts in Thailand despite controversy
Months after reports that Thailand coconut farmers rely on monkey labor, a new investigation shows little action has been taken.
https://www.national... kept in chains.
Now, what is more cruel, a monkey collecting your coconuts or a police dog forced to chase criminals? Or your average dairy cow.
