GOLDMAN SACHS: Why Is US Labor Supply So Low?: "... we attribute about a third of the US participation shortfall to the form in which fiscal support was delivered, through generous unemployment benefits instead of job retention schemes."

Is it the same in Canada, or nah?

People hopping over the border to Belgium and Germany to avoid the Dutch lockdown are filling the neighbouring countries’ restaurants and shops despite calls for them to “stay away”.

Since Mark Rutte, the Dutch prime minister, announced the closure of hospitality and non-essential shops from Sunday, border regions have experienced a rush of visitors.

While the hospitality industry in the Netherlands is shuttered, Belgium has resisted scientists’ calls for stricter measures, with restaurants open until 11pm to customers who can prove full vaccination. The German Länder, or states, have been given the power to close restaurants but such measures are generally yet to be enforced.

At a meeting on Monday with the governor of the Belgian province of Antwerp, Cathy Berx, local mayors expressed their concern about the potential spread of the Omicron variant due to border-hopping.

Berx said: “Letting this happen is the shortest route to a closure of the catering industry, and nobody wants that. And so the friendly but firm appeal is: don’t come to cafes or restaurants in the province of Antwerp now.”

Feds announce more free money!

  • Expand the Local Lockdown Program to include employers subject to capacity-limiting restrictions of 50 per cent or more; and reduce the current-month revenue decline threshold requirement to 25 per cent. Eligible employers will receive wage and rent subsidies from 25 per cent up to a maximum of 75 per cent, depending on their degree of revenue loss. The 12-month revenue decline test continues to not be required in order to access this support.
  • Expand the Canada Worker Lockdown Benefit to include workers in regions where provincial or territorial governments have introduced capacity-limiting restrictions of 50 per cent or more. As announced previously, this benefit will provide $300 a week in income support to eligible workers who are directly affected by a COVID-19-related public health lockdown, and who have lost 50 per cent or more of their income as a result.

Good for 2 months.

New one-time grants are on the way for businesses in British Columbia that were forced to shut down by the latest COVID-19 restrictions.

Ravi Kahlon, the minister of jobs, economic recovery and innovation, said affected businesses, such as bars, fitness centres and event venues, will be able to apply for a grant ranging from $1,000 to $10,000.

"Financial support is on its way and we are committed to helping them through these very difficult times," he said.

Kahlon said he knows businesses are worried and stressed but the closures are necessary to stem the spread of the Omicron variant of COVID-19.

The COVID-19 Closure Relief Grant will follow a formula similar to the government's Circuit Breaker grant in March, he added.

With the NDP there's never a shortage of taxpayer money to keep businesses closed.

I was just at the Mall and it was quite busy.  People do not seem concerned about omicron.

Not sure they should be. High case numbers/low hospitalizations.

One-time relief grants being offered by the province to businesses forced to shut down by the latest COVID-19 restrictions are being dismissed as well-meaning but pointless gestures.

“While we’re of course grateful for any help, $10,000 is realistically one good day’s sales in December for a lot of venues,” said Quincy Leachman, manager of the Duke Saloon. “We’ve all just lost out on essentially all of our Christmas and New Year’s functions that would normally tide us through traditionally slow January and February. It’s a drop in a rapidly draining bucket at this point.”

Shawn Soole of Clive’s Classic Lounge agreed, noting there are venues that would easily make $10,000 in a night.

“And while there are costs involved with these events, $10,000 won’t cover some of these venues’ rent,” he said.

Ravi Kahlon, the minister of jobs, economic recovery and innovation, announced Thursday businesses, such as bars, fitness centres and event venues, will be able to apply for a grant ranging from $1,000 to $10,000.

“Financial support is on its way and we are committed to helping them through these very difficult times,” he said.

Kahlon said he knows businesses are worried. He stressed the closures are necessary to stem the spread of the Omicron variant of COVID-19.

Soole said that kind of line is getting hard to swallow from government ministers justifying bar closures when he sees malls and big box stores operating without restriction.

When you’ve never run a business, it’s hard to know what it takes to fund a business even with the doors closed.

But it’s not just businesses forced to close that are impacted, most of the ones that remain open are impacted as the public takes the closure of some businesses to mean they shouldn’t frequent other businesses as often or visit them at all to avoid contagion.

^ which is probably true, if you believe that the closures work.

I don’t understand how one type of alcohol serving business can be impacted, but others aren’t.

For example, a “bar” is not considered to be a tasting room, so brewery facilities with on-site bars (I mean tasting rooms) where people can drink full pints at a literal bar without any food sold by the premises are permitted. And these tasting rooms are now doubling as locals among nearby residents.

Not unlike how the corona virus only affects people dining in sit down restaurants, but cannot affect people dining in food courts.

She is one of several shareholders but the optics aren't good.

It anyone thinks DBH is doing any of this for the money I don’t even know what to say. I doubt she needs more money, and she sure as heck doesn’t need this hassle.
