Scientists from the Washington State Department of Agriculture say they’ve found the first so-called live murder hornet for the year.

In a news release Thursday, entomologists say the Asian giant hornet was seen about a kilometre from the U.S.-Canada border.

You know you're dealing with big flying bugs when you can attach a freaking tracking antenna to them and watch where they go.

They got nothing on Australian bugs. In Australia you are more likely to be killed by animals or bugs than natural causes*.

Knowing the genus is called Vespa makes those italian scooters less appealing.

They've now found one nest near Blaine.  Plans underway for extermination!

Say, what's that mountain goat doing up here in the mist?

pretty elaborate murder plan.

When a hornet is captured, it is fitted with a radio transmitter and released, in the hope it can be followed back to its nest.

Once a nest of Asian giant hornets is confirmed by thermal imaging to be in a tree, the tree is wrapped in plastic wrap to prevent escape while its trunk is hit with a piece of wood to get the hornets out so they can be vacuumed up and eradicated.

I suspect the piece of wood is used twice, once to knock on the tree, and then again to eradicate the hornets in the vacuum bag.

Heat wave caused bees to ejaculate to death. Could Styrofoam 'protection' help?

B.C. farmer recalls 'incredible losses' following June 2021 heat wave. Then she went looking for a solution.

Why is the farmer looking for a "solution"?  Lots of living things would probably like to die happy, rather than the miserable way most die now.

The invasive Asian giant hornet — a.k.a. the “Murder Hornet” — first discovered on the Island in Nanaimo three years ago is getting a less-ominous common name that doesn’t have ethnic associations. The Entomological Society of America announced this week the Vespa mandarinia species will now be known as the “northern giant hornet.”

The insect, native to Asia, was spotted in 2019 in Nanaimo and the underground hive at the base of a tree was quickly eradicated from a south-city park. But more hives have been discovered since in Washington state and several single specimens have been collected along the U.S.-British Columbia border using traps.

The society said use of “Asian” in the name of a pest insect can “unintentionally bolster anti-Asian sentiment.

I have to admit I do blame Asians for almost all my hornet issues.
