I watched the movie Unlocked today, lots of action in it, but the final few minutes are the most enlightening, considering it was made in 2017.

We Need an Operation Warp Speed for Long COVID

With millions of people affected and at least $1 trillion of economic value at stake, long COVID is our next national health emergency

Long COVID is a multifaceted condition that can follow SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) infection and affects the neurologic, cardiovascular, pulmonary, hematologic and endocrine systems, leading to anything from mild to debilitating disease. From a public health perspective, the effects of long COVID are massive; a recent review published in Nature estimated that at least 65 million people worldwide have already experienced it.

In August 2022, the Brookings Institution estimated that Long COVID is keeping the equivalent of two million to four million full-time workers out of the American labor force, resulting in about $170 billion of lost earnings per year. Economist David Cutler drew similar conclusions and, moreover, estimated the U.S. health costs of long COVID to be on the order of $100 billion per year. These combined estimates imply a real cost of more than $1 trillion over a five-year period, even before accounting for lost quality of life, increased disability costs and the burden on caregivers and the health care system. In our roles observing the health and economic toll of long COVID, these accumulating effects are breathtaking and extremely concerning.

Florida health officials ignored key data from a COVID study when issuing a recommendation against certain types of vaccines for young men, according to a new report.

The state’s surgeon general, Joseph Ladapo, announced in October that adult males, ages 18 to 39, should not get mRNA COVID-19 vaccines, such as Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna, because of an “abnormally high risk of cardiac-related death among men in this age group.”

The recommendation, which was based on findings from a state analysis, went against advice issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It was criticized as “deeply flawed” by several health experts — including by people at the University of Florida, where Ladapo is also employed as a professor.

On Friday, the Tampa Bay Times reported that draft versions of the analysis showed that catching COVID-19 could increase the risk of a cardiac-related death much more than getting a vaccine — but that was omitted from the final version published by the state’s health department.

People who avoid COVID-19 precautions to prevent illness are more likely to purchase firearms—a pattern of behavior most common among moderate and conservative individuals, according to a Rutgers study.

The data shows more liberals are buying guns in the US than ever before, or at least in numbers not seen in modern times, and gun ownership is rising in liberal cities/states.

Conclusion: Face mask side-effects must be assessed (risk-benefit) against the available evidence of their effectiveness against viral transmissions. In the absence of strong empirical evidence of effectiveness, mask wearing should not be mandated let alone enforced by law.

If masks don't work, why are there so many industries that mandate the use of anything from N95 to respirators to full self-contained oxygen supplies?

We're not mandating N95 or better masks, though. Our governments say a tissue is protection against viruses. That's very flawed.

I agree.  Perhaps N95 should have been the minimum standard.  However, duration of exposure also comes into play here.  10 minutes distanced in a grocery store vs 30 minutes at a table with your banker in a small room vastly impact transmission.

We couldn’t produce enough N95 masks during the pandemic for them to go around to everyone, and their priority was for hospitals. So as a measure to keep people from panicking, the cloth masks were touted as sufficient protection, when they really weren’t, and never could be.

Their effect is psychological.

...Their effect is psychological.

Step One: Control the people's minds. Then it's much easier to control their bodies.

Can you show me evidence where cloth masks provided no protection for shorter duration contacts?

If the intent was to have a psychological effect, that could have easily backfired as people spent more time together falsely thinking cloth masks helped.

I’m not sure what shorter duration contacts means.

Are you standing near someone in a grocery line for 5 minutes or are you sitting across the table from your banker for 30 minutes in a small room.  These factors change the exposure risk substantially.
