Oak Bay rugby club cuts ties with coach accused of sexual assaults

Castaway Wanderers FC announced this weekend that it asked for and received a resignation from the coach. This past weekend 4 allegations, spaced over the past 20 years, emerged on the Survivors Stories Project Instagram account. 3 allege unwanted sexual touching and the other alleges nonconsensual sexual acts with an intoxicated and unconscious person. The stories also emphasize a gap in age, power, and popularity. 3 accusers said they were teenagers at the time.

Of the 4 allegations, 1 was connected to rugby and the others related to the coach’s roles in local nightlife, most recently at The Local in Bastion Square. The restaurant had not released any statement as of Sunday night.

The should not name the person, until the accusations are proven. What happened to " innocent until found guilty by a jury of your peers"? Seems recently, anyone can make an allegation and the accused is instantly fired, name dragged through the mud.

I would imagine the firings are after consultation with the accused. We’ll note that one of the brokerages in Victoria didn’t even issue a statement until an additional account had surfaced.

There is now a petition to have The Local investigated as two people affiliated to the bar have been named as part of the recent accusations.

If the rumours are true and one of the named parties is taking legal action then we may finally start to see limits in the future. It is tough though, no matter how strong your case is you will be portrayed as victim bashing. Strong incentive to take the hit and hope that things blow over in 6 months and everyone has moved on.

I think that it would be a mistake to conclude that there was consultation and that the firings confirm any guilt or involvement in the alleged actions. That is not to say that any of the accused were not involved, just that all parties would have recognized that future employment was untenable under the circumstances and the only consideration was how to formalize the exit.

No, certainly not confirming guilt, but I would imagine the people accused would want to leave the region if not for a while then for good. It would make sense to formally end employment. At least one agent turned in his license to the brokerage.

Not only did the culture, strategy and leadership at the Rugby Canada national training centre in Langford come under withering criticism in an independent review commissioned by the organization, but so did the Island community itself.

“Langford is not viewed as a positive place to live with it being framed as ‘expensive’ and ‘isolated,’ ” states the report, released Wednesday.

“In comparison to Langford, many have questioned if there truly is an overall benefit to removing athletes from effective club/university/provincial development programs in favour of a centralized Langford-based program.

Langford’s physical location on the extreme edge of Western Canada maximizes its geographical remove and generally exacerbates already challenging Canadian travel logistics.”

Move it to Edmonton and they can practise in the snow. Since when is Langford an expensive place to live. I guess Vancouver or Toronto would be better. Who writs these idiot reports?

^^ What a joke. The location is the problem and not the woke activists who have taken over the organization and sowed mistrust and hate.

Better yet, move it to the centre of the continent, Winnipeg, and they can enjoy being central to everything.

Thunder Bay would be a great choice, the woke would fit right in, especially during hunting season.

My guess is that Langford isn't woke enough for whoever wrote the report.  They should relocate to the downtown east side of Vancouver.

Mayor Stew Young has shot back at an independent review of Rugby Canada in which Langford, home of the rugby national training centre, was described as “isolated” and “expensive.”

“I was shocked and disappointed in those comments,” said Young.

The review questioned having Vancouver Island as a base for Rugby Canada operations and athletes: “Langford is not viewed as a positive place to live with it being framed as ‘expensive’ and ‘isolated,’ ” it said.

“It’s probably the feeling of just a few people and should not have been put in the report,” said Young.

“Because that’s not the feeling of the majority of people in Rugby Canada I’ve talked to the past 10 years, who are very happy with Langford. It’s not isolated. It’s a metro area of more than 400,000 people. And Vancouver is twice as expensive to live in and Toronto three times as expensive. It’s a year-round training venue. You can’t play rugby in five feet of snow.”

Did the report suggest alternatives to Langford?

Was it the lack of on-street parking that really upset these people?

I was pretty sure Stew was going to have something to say.

Smart enough for the TC, they got two stories out of it.

But I’m sure Dheensaw is in a doghouse a bit today.
