A nine-foot-tall interactive cellphone is making stops in Victoria this week as part of a new campaign from B.C.’s Human Rights Commissioner aimed at helping the public identify misinformation.

Members of the public can try the quiz-style installation at the Royal BC Museum’s Clifford Carl Hall on Dec. 3 and 4 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The initiative is part of the commissioner’s “Misinformation: Can You STOP It?” campaign, which uses interactive tools to show how false or misleading information spreads online and how individuals can help prevent it.

They should send that up to the Kamlooos band maybe.

This is the same commissioner who says stigma is the real problem driving the toxic drug crisis.

I really enjoyed watching this documentary. It was well done, full of common sense, focusing on facts, and not trying to push a "truth" or narrative based on feelings.

That’s not true. Buddy in the middle claims the after the “buffalo population suddenly collapsed, the FN lobbied the government to put them on reserves and educate their children how to farm.” They should have stuck to the facts.

The federal government says these were provisions in the treaty negotiations. I’m just pasting what I found:

The rapid expansion of the United States across the West alarmed many Canadian politicians who feared that the United States would annex Rupert's Land. The fears of American expansionism were real as several different groups throughout the American territories openly called for the annexation of the Hudson Bay Company lands. This was compounded by a belief that any expansion by Canada across the Prairies was detrimental to US interests.

Western expansion was seen as a vital part of Canada's economic future. Without Rupert's Land, Canada would be hemmed into the North-East corner of the continent, unable to tap into the resources and riches of the Prairies, limited to the narrow strip of arable land between the Great Lakes and unable to attract new immigrants to boost the population and drive commerce. Immediately following the proclamation of Confederation, the Dominion began negotiations with Britain and the Hudson's Bay Company for the acquisition of the Company's Charter to Rupert's Land. The charter was secured and full control transferred by the British under the Rupert's Land Act of 1868 and the Northwest Territories Transfer Act in 1870. After the creation of Manitoba in 1870, the Macdonald Government proceeded to establish the administrative structure of the Northwest Territories. The Northwest Territories Act extended Canada's legal jurisdiction over the Territories outside of Manitoba and made provisions for an administrative structure and application of Canadian law throughout the Territories.

Regardless of the legal status of the Northwest Territories being as a part of Canada, the fact remained that the Territories were devoid of any Canadian authority and was still the domain of Aboriginal people. Although the Dominion had purchased the title for Rupert's Land, it had no way of exerting its influence or jurisdiction over the area.

As part of the obligations created by the transfer of the HBC charter, Canada was responsible for addressing any and all Aboriginal claims to land. Taking the form established by the 1850 Robinson Treaties, the Crown negotiated eleven treaties between 1871 and 1921. These treaties covered the area between the Lake of the Woods to the Rocky Mountains to the Beaufort Sea. Similar to the Robinson Treaties, the so-called Numbered Treaties promised reserve lands, annuities, and the continued right to hunt and fish on unoccupied Crown lands in exchange for Aboriginal title. However, these treaties also held clauses that were very similar to many of the civilisation programs undertaken in central Canada. All treaties had clauses for schools or teachers to educate children, and agricultural implements were promised to assist Aboriginal signatories in their transition towards an agricultural lifestyle. Aboriginal signatories were encouraged to settle on reserve lands in sedentary communities, learn agriculture and receive an education. The Treaty Commissioners explained that the reserves were to assist Aboriginal people to adapt to a life without the buffalo hunt and that the Government would assist them in the transition to agriculture by providing tools and other farming implements.

So faced with what was happening in the US, were the terms of these negotiations seen as beneficial in those times? Again, I don’t know, I’m just asking the question.

Know it all.

That nice looking lady yelling and wailing and moaning into the microphone with the fancy headphones on was Tanya Tagaq, famous Canadian throat singer.  I thought the performance was pretty polished!

While it was no doubt better here than down south. There actually was open mass murder going on in the USA Including the genocidal scale of the buffalo hunt.
That particular blurb brushes over the fact that the HSBC didn’t own Rupert’s land. The monarchy had granted them a monopoly to operate there. That’s the foundation of the partnership that was there with the FN. many worked for the HSBC or with. It’s why we have the Métis people. They are the blend of European and FN people. Speaking of Métis, that blurb also brushes over how Manitoba was formed. It was because the newly formed Canada just started surveying the land that the Métis were living on and farming etc. Louis Riel led the revolution that formed their self government (the province of Manitoba). The feds disrespected their agreements, like they did with their treaties with the FN and Riel led another revolution. This time the Feds won with force and hung Riel for treason after a kangaroo court tried him.

Trump has turned hatred of immigrants (especially non-Christians) into a rallying cry for the right wing. In Canada the right have chosen immigrants and FN.

Dangerous times in both countries as the economy continues in its 'k' form and the disenfranchised become more and more angry.

Chief Karen Bell of Garden River First Nation is thankful the Ben Bankas show has been cancelled.

She said the board at the Sault Community Theatre centre apologized to her and Garden River First Nation for booking the controversial comedian for a show in March.

Bell was assured the board would be more aware and attentive to any scheduled performances in the future.

“To know that someone was attempting to make jokes (about residential schools) was very hurtful.

“We are the first people of this country who Canada made a great effort to eradicate.”

Former prime minister Justin Trudeau acknowledged the travesty of residential schools and made a very public apology to this country, Bell said.

“Since that time legislation and efforts by descendants of settlers have supported reconciliation and been inclusive of the first peoples of this land.”

Bell took issue with the comedian’s depiction of residential schools, which Bankas said had “nice architecture.”

"If you wanted to go to a residential school now, in 2025 it'd be like $40,000 a year. Those motherf---ers got it for free," Bankas said during his act.

He also made a joke about his visit to Winnipeg, which he described as an “Indigenous zombie apocalypse.”
