Gorge picnic on Canada Day back for 25th year

With Canada Day just around the corner, organizers of the Gorge Canada Day Picnic are preparing to hold the event for a landmark 25th year.

The picnic’s free attractions — which bring in up to 10,000 people each year — will be spread along Gorge Road West, which will be closed to traffic from Tillicum Road to Admirals Road on July 1 from 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m.

“This event was founded on the belief that our community deserves a day to come together, connect and celebrate where we live,” said event chair Brandon Devnich.

“We’re proud to carry that tradition forward, and this year’s 25th anniversary gives us even more reason to celebrate.”

The annual picnic is hosted by the Gorge Tillicum Community Association, and will feature live entertainment, more than 30 food trucks and hands-on activities such as a kids’ play zone and a road hockey game.

Also on tap are a kids’ parade, pancake breakfast, strawberry tea and the Art and Artisan Market.

Can't say enough good things about the hard working folks behind the Gorge Canada Day celebrations which IMO is by a far margin the very best of the bunch regionally. Well worth your time if you're in the area. Lots of activities to participate in for adult and kidlin' alike.....

I miss the Canada Day picnic in Beacon Hill. When it first began they used to have a lot of the food tents right on Dallas Road, then later the fireworks were off of Clover Point. I really enjoyed it back then.

Victoria

• Canada Day programming will start Tuesday at 11 a.m. around the Inner Harbour and legislature grounds.

There will be a busking showcase at Ship Point from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and a Kid Zone near the Royal B.C. Museum.

A stage at the legislature will feature an all-B.C. lineup of performers from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m., with Delhi 2 Dublin as the headline performer. Other acts include Blue Moon Marquee, MIINA, DJ Boitano and the REACH! Performing Company — which will sing the national anthem.

Canada Day fireworks at the Inner Harbour will start at 10:20 p.m.

Belleville Street from Government Street to Menzies Street will be closed all day, as will Menzies from Belleville to Quebec Street, with further closures at the discretion of police due to the expected increase in crowds starting in the early evening, in advance of the fireworks.

The City of Victoria is encouraging people to walk, cycle or bus to the downtown festivities, and noted that B.C. Transit will have extra buses deployed after the fireworks.

Victoria police officers and volunteer reserve constables will be on duty for much of the day, and police will use video surveillance cameras and a drone to monitor the area.

More information and a list of performers can be found at canadadayvictoria.ca.

• Huntingdon Hotel and Pendray Inn is hosting a free pancake breakfast Tuesday from 8 to 11 a.m.
