Perhaps the intent was to put on a pathetic show and have people complain about the cost so that they would have an excuse to cancel them in the future.

Probably I reason I haven't bought their ice cream in a long time.

 

When your business gets into politics, no matter how noble you think it is, you still lose touch with customers.

 

B & J as far as I am concerned can collectively go suck a large lollipop. If they feel that strongly about the issue then I am absolutely certain they will have no problem whatsoever carving off X % of their profits - every year going forward in perpetuity, from every single one of their Canadian outlets - and gift the money to every single FN in the country, proportionate to that band's population and historic territory on which many of those B&J outlets are surely located.....

Not sure of the logic here. Whenever you take sides on a political issue you alienate 50% of your customers these days. Unless they feel that their supporters will eat 100% more ice cream in support then it is a net loss.

On July 1, Saturna Island hosted its 72nd Lamb Barbeque. I am going to make the challenge that it is one of the most exceptional Canada Day parties in the country.

 

Here’s why. The most remote Southern Gulf Island accessible by ferry has only 400-something permanent residents, yet at a time when most communities lament the absence of volunteers, Saturna gathered more than 220 people, young and old, many of whom began planning and organizing months in advance to put on a feast for their friends, neighbours and visitors.

 

This year 27 lamb carcasses were trucked from the Campbell Farm on Saturna to the community hall.

 

Each one was split open and “racked” on a seven-foot-thick, hand-made iron stake with a cross bar.

More than 1,700 people attended the celebration. ­Saturna-ites served more than 1,100 meals of BBQ lamb, rice, salad and island-made rolls.

 

If lamb wasn’t to your taste you could have a Saturna veggie burger, a hamburger, fish tacos or a hot dog.

 

There was popcorn and ice cream cones, a wine tent and a beer garden, book sales and crafts. There were games for kids of all ages, a tug-a-war, nail driving competition and live music and dancing.

 

People came on the ferry in their cars, by foot, on their bikes and motorcycles. They came on the Aqualink (a new passenger ferry service linking the Gulf Islands) and the seaplane and on more than 160 private boats, which moored in Winter Cove, across the street from the BBQ site.

This looks like an awesome event but of course I’m always working on Canada Day. The Aqualink shuttle here did good business that day!

Council also is considering what role it will play in future Canada Day celebrations.

 

In a letter to council’s committee of the whole, Mayor Marianne Alto said “it is evident that increasing amounts of public and private funding will be required to maintain the quality and scope of the Celebration.”

 

The cost and who pays for it should be considered following next year’s celebration, the letter recommended.

^ As I said in another thread, I would not be surprised that the real intent here is to kill Canada Day celebrations. Helps couldn't get it done with her reconciliation message so Alto will try and kill it on the basis that it costs too much. 

 

Aside from police and CoV staff overtime, I can't see what the City spent money on this year. The 'entertainment' was rinky dink and the fireworks were a measly 6 minutes (the Harbourcats BTW did a better job with their 20 minute fireworks display).

City of Victoria to provide $350,000 to Canada Day bash

 

“$350,000 is the new $250,000,” Jeff Day, the city’s senior cultural planner, told council Thursday.

 

Day noted that costs have increased across the board and corporate sponsorships are becoming more difficult to procure.

 

This year, event organizers had to scramble to find a new partner after the main sponsor, Mayfair Shopping Centre owners Central Walk Holdings Ltd., pulled out. Just weeks before the event, EF International Language Campuses stepped in to take over.

 

Staff said the $350,000 total budget should be adequate to fully fund a more polished production, with higher-profile performers and a larger stage, without corporate sponsorships or risk to community partners.

 

“The fact is we want to build a platform that has the local residents come and say: ‘Man, we live in a glorious city,’ ” said Coleman.

Something is up. Every other city in the country seems to find corporate money for Canada Day. Maybe the City just doesn't want to have to work with any other group.
