Where are the best bakeries?  We seem to have very few in this town.

i believe royal bay bakery is popular:

maybe some of the in-store large grocery bakeries have become very good, people no longer need a stand-alone?

TripAdvisor says  that La Roux Patisserie on fisgard is best.

Crust is great. On Fort.

And the convenience of Cobs can’t be beat.

Know it all.

It always surprises me how a chain like Cobs is really quite good.

Always amazes me how other chains aren’t quite so good.

Lighthouse is a great bakery, but mostly confectionaries. In grocery stores I'm always a huge fan of Portofino's products but I use the local Cobs which is, as you say, very good product-wise.

Is this thread because you're too hungry for a sandwich to Google?

It all depends on what you're looking for.  Bread?  Crust is good (they also have a kiosk in the green at Uptown).  Fol epi and Fry's for crusty sourdough.   Bond Bonds.  Wildfire up on Quadra.  I've heard good things about Working Culture.  In the stores, there's Portofino products.  Cobs.  6Mile.  Lone Tree on Craigflower.  Irenes.

La Roux is excellent, but it's a patisserie, so no bread, just really good croissants, etc.  Crust again for danish and tarts.  Dutch Bakery.   Bubby Roses.  Murchies.  Ruth & Dean on Estevan.

Edited to add:  Esquimalt Bakery in the mall with the Country Grocer.  She makes the best jam busters.  also good donuts, buns, etc.  Pure Vanilla on Cadboro Bay Rd.  And dammit, now I'm the one who's hungry...

The best bakery for your sort of old-fashioned type things with good prices is by far Sidney Bakery. Was just there two weeks ago. There's always a huge line. A customer asked the clerk, is it always this busy? Clerk said, every day, all day. People buy chocolate donuts by the dozen! I find many bakeries in Victoria have high prices but Sidney Bakery is very reasonable. I think donuts are about $1.79.

Dutch Bakery is good for fancy cakes and tarts but I wish they had donuts and things like that. I also like going to Murchies for an espresso and piece of cake, but sadly haven't done so for ages now.

Trouble with grocery stores is you often can't buy just one of  something. I don't need four or six danish when I really just want one. Then you get more plastic to get rid of too.

Some places that haven't been mentioned yet: Mosi has excellent croissants and their bars and cookies are also really good. Working Culture for sourdough bread, Bikery for pretzels, bagels, and challah. For asian-style baked goods, there is Wah Lai Yuen and the one on Government St near Fisgard that I can't remember the name of.

Just thought of a few more, because I love going to bakeries!

Fern Bakery and Cafe is 100% vegan. Their cinnamon sugar donuts are really good! For fancy (aka $$ donuts) I prefer Empire's donuts and flavour options, but Yonni's/Discovery has a really good crueller that has a hint of lemon in it. Victoria Baking Company opened a storefront last year on Quadra, they're a more old-school bakery and have a wide range of treats.  Bon Macaron, Pure Vanilla, Origin (gluten-free), and Cakes Etc. are also good.

These do not have brick and mortars, but Good Side Baking has fancy cream puff pop-ups at the Hudson, and Sidney Scones sells fancy scones for pick up every week.

Sidney is great, but I am not sure if the girl at the counter was being truthful about all the calories being taken out of the chocolate donuts.

We might have to ask Bill Gates to settle this.
