I sure do stop in Sidney more and more these days.  I can get my Dutch Bakery ribbon cake at Market Garden.

The unique taste and flavours of Scandinavian baking are coming soon to Sidney, with an exciting new bakery currently warming up to open its doors.

Opening later this month (July), Smør Scandinavian Bakery will offer sweet and savoury treats from Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland. Visitors can expect rye breads, cardamom buns, heart-shaped waffles and authentic Danish pastries.

“To my knowledge, there's no other bakery on Vancouver Island that is specifically focusing on Scandinavian baked goods,” said owner Leah Hayward. “So I do think there is a real hunger for it. Also, in the community there’s an underserved population who all of a sudden are like, wow, I can finally get ‘food from home’. So there's a lot of excitement there.”

Here is a great opportunity to purchase the business assets and take over the lease of an existing bakery and pastry shop in downtown Victoria! The space has lots of prep area, all the necessary equipment for baking and creating delicious pastries and an existing Hood and exhaust system which would allow cooking and deep frying! Contact the listing agent for more information and a complete list of assets.

A persistent amateur baker from Esquimalt is taking on some sweet challenges in front of a national audience.

Breaking records before even facing the first televised task, Jen Childs claims the title for most applications to The Great Canadian Baking Show, having auditioned for the show every year since the first season.

“If you want to get better at something, it’s important to face new challenges and maybe to take some risks,” she told the Victoria News. “A TV show is just that.”

Haven't been down that way for a long time: is Crust still hanging in? IMO it was always severely underrated and I think sometimes overlooked due to the proximity of Dutch Bakery down the street.

As an aside I knew and still know some of the DB family, and had a good buddy married to a family member I'd known previously for decades, so we'd occasionally drop in there for lunch - bar none one of the very best cheeseburgers of all things that you can get in Victoria is served up by DB, usually with home made potato salad or a delicious pork meatball soup. The policy may have changed in the interim but at that time they did not offer up fries with burgers, preferring to serve home-made salad/soup options.

They did add fries many years ago. They always had a fryer, so I guess they caved to customer requests.

Crust is still going, but it really is a much different style of bakery. There is room for both even if they were side by side. I’ve been to Crust a few times. Dutch Bakery many many more times!

Worth mentioning that Dutch Bakery doesn’t have a liquor license. No beers at lunch.

Featuring products by
Irene’s Bakery & 6 Mile Bakery

Irene’s Bakery has been a family owned business in Victoria since opening in 1985 on Oak Bay Avenue. In the late 80’s the founding family decided it needed more space and purchased Rose Bud Bakery and building, which had been operating since the 1960’s, and brought both bakeries together in our former Government Street location.

In 2019 Irene’s had the opportunity to merge with another Victoria institution, 6 Mile Bakery.  As a result we moved our wholesale operations to 6 Mile’s Carey Rd production facility and combined the two very experienced baking teams. This merger allowed Irene’s to add a donut line and the well known 6 Mile line of products found in local grocers.

Both bakeries were founded on the principles of traditional European bread making, and these principles are still practiced each and every day at Irene’s. Our mission is to provide quality products and service to Southern Vancouver Island’s grocers, restaurants, golf courses, institutions and coffee shops.

Our bakers have many years of combined baking experience. This, along with our our focus on quality ingredients, exceptional customer service, and a willingness to work with our customers has allowed us to service an ever expanding list of clients as far up island as Nanaimo.

We are big enough to deliver, but small enough to care!

Let the record show I'm still not very familiar with Carey Road area even after almost 38 years walking on this earth. I had no idea that bakery building was there. If you had asked me about it I would have given you a blank stare worthy of a VV staff meeting.

We used to buy bread there all the time, Peasant bread it was called, we bought 10 loaves at a time for the freezer.

A few years ago we went to pick up bread and it's retail store was closed. I tried to find the bread at another retailer and finally found some but it wasn't the same bread at all.
