Group calls for moratorium on new development in Sooke

Transition Sooke fears town can’t meet its greenhouse gas emission guidelines

A public-interest group wants the District of Sooke to place an interim moratorium on all new development in the municipality.

Transition Sooke fears the district can’t meet its greenhouse emissions guidelines, preserve carbon capture and maintain the small-town atmosphere if growth goes unfettered.

It made a presentation to council Monday night (Dec. 13) calling for the moratorium.

Sooke isn't exactly a model of sustainability. It's highly car dependent and full of low efficiency housing. If they had more people living there maybe better transportation options would become viable.

It’s the biggest BC community without inter-town transit services, so it’s hard to fault people for having to drive everywhere. And of course the town-proper is not what most people would consider Sooke, so it’s caught between the CRD’s Juan de Fuca regulations and its own.

Adding to that, the town has no retail apart from grocery and truck stop-level amenities. Residents are almost entirely dependent on Langford and the rest of Greater Victoria for services and shopping which puts a ton of cars on the road.

A Canadian Tire would seem right for Sooke.

It would, but they have to undo their store size limits in the commercial zoning first. That’s what the applicant of the new retail plaza is trying to do alongside getting approval for their project.
