It’s all we do.

What if it turns out, the majority of CoV workers get free parking? If only we had a City of Victoria parking expert to help us out here.

Where there is paid parking, CoV staff pay, where there isn't they don't.  I'm pretty sure were I to put a pay station in the public works yard, it may get run over by accident.

Eventually the Saanich PW yard will need to be rebuilt.  I don't think they can get a new site this day and age so maybe it can be done piece meal.

Or the City will change the parking limits, like on Cook adjacent to Beacon Hill Park's public works yard

I'm not sure there was ever a limit there.  I do not recall...

I still think the Saanich PW yard will need an update at some point.

Yes, that's what I mean. It's parking used by city employees, so there's no time limit there. The time limit begins as soon as you get to the playground and the rest of the block, also across the street is res zone.

I'm starting to think, that Victoria does indeed supply free parking to the majority of its workforce  :teacher:

No it's a terrible use but that's how it is in most yards. Good luck with changing that. You should be running for office somewhere, so many good ideas...

The proper question here is...

Has this free parking been properly assesed on whether our not it should be a taxable benefit. There are very few things that can be "free" any longer in a employer/ employee relationship. Or has this free parking just gone under the radar?

It's an unrestricted (no charge or limit) street that is not guaranteed.   I don't believe that would be a taxable benefit.

Yes, it is here, not at the works yard though.

I don't think we've even been able to get you to admit this parking is left unrestricted to aid parks workers though.  Even though there is nothing similar (no hours restriction, just a "no overnight parking" rule) anywhere near it.  Very convenient.   :rtfm:

Once upon a time, Tyee Road here......

....was full of downtown workers' cars, as it had no restriction.  That ended a very long time ago.

I believe an Accountant would tell you that if your employer provides free parking in any way, shape, or form - then it's most defintiely a taxable benefit, and must be declared as such by the employer when they issue a T-4.

Revenue Canada has seen and heard all the excuses as to why employer provided free parking "isn't really free parking", and in my experience RevCan rejects almost 100% of those tales out of hand, and goes about deducing how much is owed to RevCan retroactively as a result of undeclared free parking.

A public works yard may be noted somewhere in RevCan's paperwork as not being included in the requirement to declare free parking, I don't know, but if I was one of the employees taking advantage of that free parking, I'd make a casual inquiry to my payroll department regarding all of the above.

Public works yard would be a taxable benefit.

I think a strongly civic minded individual, who would want each person paying their proper and fair share of taxes, who works for a government agency, would be calling RevCan to get a ruling on questionable parking.

I would imagine that’s all dealt with accordingly by the City.

But it is pretty cool to see so much free parking for City workers 😎

Saanich buys Lochside Drive property for parks department

The purchase of land for a new headquarters for the parks department will free up much-needed space for public works, says Saanich’s mayor

The article of course neglects to say exactly where this land and office is (Lochside Drive is one of the longest streets in Greater Victoria), but I assume it's the Don Mann property.

It is. The Saanich press release lists the actual addresses (4088, 4094, 4098 Lochside Dr) which is the Don Mann lot. Not sure why the TC omitted the address...

Yup.

Press release to the rescue:

Saanich, BC – The Saanich Operations Centre - the hub for many of our municipal services – is aging and slated for redevelopment. A major milestone was reached with the acquisition of a nearby property, allowing Saanich to continue to make progress on this important project, reduce overall project costs and allow for smooth operations into the future.

“We are thrilled to announce that this complex and multi-faceted project is progressing,” said Mayor Dean Murdock. “The property we have recently acquired will reduce overall project costs as well as provide additional space for our operations, ensuring a high quality of service is maintained throughout this large redevelopment project.”

Why a new property?

The property – 4088, 4094 and 4098 Lochside Drive – is located close to the current operations centre (1040 McKenzie Avenue). Our goal is that this property will become Saanich’s new Parks Operations Centre in the next few years. Relocating Parks to a new site will free up the current site for investment in other uses.

Value for taxpayers’ dollars was also a key factor considered as part of this purchase. The property was recently developed in 2018 with fully functional offices, vehicle storage and a mechanic shop already located on site. This $25 million investment in a newer 3-acre property that meets our operational needs will allow us to progress the overall redevelopment project faster while saving on costly new construction. The new site can also be used while the current centre is being redeveloped to temporarily continue operations, resulting in fewer service interruptions and lower costs.

What’s next?

We look forward to sharing more information with the public as plans for the new operations centre continue to take shape.
