$45-million-land-acquisition-will-deliver-450-rentals,-public-plaza-to-former-Pacific-Mazda-lands.jpg

Downtown Victoria's Pacific Mazda dealership lands, at 1050 Yates Street (seen in this image looking southwest from the intersection of Cook and Johnson streets) have been acquired by Chard Development. The company plans to build a rental community on the property, the zoning for which has already been approved by the City of Victoria with a density of approximately 450-units.

An artist's rendering from 2019 depicting the build-out of the Pacific Mazda lands spanning the 1000-blocks of Yates and Johnson streets at Cook Street. The first phase of the project, an 11-storey affordable rental tower at 1025 Johnson Street, is currently under construction and depicted with white colouring in the image above. Subsequent phases are depicted in blue.

I just hope to god that they reconsider that huge grassy space. This should be a plaza not some mucky green space for looking at and not using.

If the sidewalks of downtown Victoria are good enough for people to use then they should be good enough for dogs to use.

It’s already zoned.

And aren’t rentals supposed to get some type of fast-track?

We shall see about the pace here.

This will move along quickly:

With zoning already in place, Chard Development will pursue final permitting as part of a municipal planning process in 2023, with a construction start targeted for later in the year or by early 2024.

I bet they are starting construction by the end of 2023. Guessing they will want to beat the adjacent property out of the ground which they will do surely

I think Starlight is ready to go, with approvals pending Feb 9th. They’ll be well underway, if approved, by the end of 2023.

Nparker per that rendering, I think you're mixed up with Starlights 1045 Yates project (old Harris dealership) across the street from this site (old Mazda dealership).

You are correct. I blame it on old age.

When are we going to cut to the chase and just go for 45-storey buildings?

Come on. What's going on with those guys now? Why are their projects becoming so charmless? That image is like the full inversion of everything that made the past "Chard" projects so great.

When a Chard project in Victoria looks nothing like a Chard project and nothing like Victoria then it may indicate you've gone off the rails a bit.

We’re not. In a strong wind (see climate change threads) that would just tip the whole island on its side.
