Protection Island[2] is a small island located 1.5 km north-east of downtown NanaimoBritish ColumbiaCanada in the Nanaimo Harbour. The island was originally named Douglas Island, after James Douglas the first Governor of the Colony of Vancouver Island and British Columbia. It was renamed Protection Island in 1960. The permanent year-round population is about 350 people.

There are no paved roads on the island. Some residents move about the island in golf carts, others with cars, but most walk. Locals frequently transport their groceries from the community dock with their own wheelbarrows. Access to the island can be via private vessel or a small, privately run ferry which departs from downtown Nanaimo at Maffeo Sutton Park and docks at Dinghy Dock Pub on the island. Dinghy Dock Pub is Canada's only registered floating pub. Some residents also commute by kayak or rowboat as well.

That flower solar array setup is made by a Vancouver startup - Lumera Solar. One of the only made in Canada solar panels. They’re getting to be quite big.

If a solar panel is 3 1/4 feet by 5 1/2 feet and its rating indicate that it produces 360 watts, then it seems reasonable to assume that each square foot should produce roughly 20 watts, but not so fast.

The real test of the solar panel system is how it performs in real-life conditions.

If your solar panel is going to produce the maximum power per square foot, it needs to be designed well enough to account for temperature, spectrum, angle, and amount of light, as detailed below.

Ok, so it’s a vanity project still with these installations. I’d like to have something for my shed that I don’t want to wire and to be honest, when you look at the costs vs practicality it’s either a let down right up front or it will be post installation. Still. This stuff has been talked about for 40 years. We had solar powered calculators when I was a kid.

I think we have driven down the cost of lighting significantly (LED lighting), so these panels can help with that.  But heating and major appliances, they take good old-fashioned POWER.  Even some electronics do.

It's pretty hard to beat grid power.  Where available.

$1,795,000

Fane Island is one of the Southern Gulf Islands' true little gems. Situated in the heart of British Columbia's famous southern Gulf Islands, Fane Island is located in the Navy Channel, just off the east coast of North Pender Island and only a 5 minute boat ride from Hope Bay, which boasts a community dock for easy access. With a high water land area of about 1.9 acres, the island feels much larger due to its gentle topography and the configuration of the man made harbour at its nothern tip with a pretty little sandy beach. The island had a beautiful native ground cover with some old growth trees and open vistas that offer a front row seat for watching seals, orca whales, bald eagles and playful river otters. The island is improved with a one room rustic cottage with propane fridge, rainwater collection, wood stove and a full septic system. There is also an older solar power system installed. The island has a foreshore lease for a private moorage located within the harbour. There is no dock or ramp at present but the foreshore lease permits the installation of a new dock.
