Last night was the kidlin's birthday so she decided mom and dad would take her to Glo on Jutland for dinner: imagine my surprise when I discovered the very best halibut and chips I've ever had in Victoria, including the old Barb's fish and chips when Barb was still running it, came from this place. It was awesome and I've had my share of halibut and chips locally over the years.

Highly recommended if you're ever there for a meal. Two large pieces of halibut plus a generous helping of excellent fries and very tasty coleslaw was a very reasonable $27. All in including appy's for each of us + dinner for three + two drinks for the birthday girl was $119....

And naturally with the good weather and their spacious deck right on the Gorge the place was jammed. Surprisingly I had no issue at all finding a parking spot. Two thumb's up.

Why isn’t salmon and chips a thing?

It is a thing. Go peruse the menu at Red Fish, Blue Fish, Finest at Sea, Barb's or Oak Bay Seafood.

It’s most definitely a thing.

I wonder where glo is getting their halibut to sell for that price. Twice frozen, pre portioned?

Rock Bay?

I get most of my lobster and cod there.

As coincidence would have it, I'm pretty sure I had a very good salmon and chips at Glo when it first opened as South Bay.

Rock Bay lobster isn’t as refined as other lobster 🦞 but it’s got the street smarts to make up for it.

As others have noted you can certainly find salmon and chips around town but as a rule traditional F&C are served with a white-meat fish.

Overall cod is probably the most common fish served with the meal, halibut IMO is better - its denser and the meat is sweeter - but of course its a personal choice. US-caught halibut - IOW Alaska halibut in this part of the world - is also sustainably managed and caught. which is consideration for me.

Aside from taste (for me) and the environmental angle halibut is a great dietary choice due to its high selenium content which makes it excellent for heart health as well as its anti-inflammatory qualities.

Different fish also react and respond differently depending on the cooking method. I usually bake or bbq salmon, bake or sometimes poach cod but I would never bbq halibut because in my experience its finicky and it can be hard for it not to turn out too dry. Deep frying it - and the Glo batter unlike many others was very light, crispy and very tasty - is the way to get with that fish.

Looks like I picked a great time to open my “you harvest”* Rock Bay fishery wholesale discount club (salmon with chips ALWAYS 40% off).

If only the prawns would properly cooperate. But do they ever?

* like You Pick farms but considerably more dangerous due to water depth, temperature, wetness.

Your #1 customer will be Todd, though an octopus should have no issues with the depth concerns.
