Hockey Night in Canada host Ron MacLean will make the announcement next Monday at 4:30 p.m. during a broadcast of the Stanley Cup final on Sportsnet.

The Victoria Hockey Legacy Society, the local organizing committee, confirmed that Victoria was picked as host and a formal announcement will be made next Tuesday at Ship Point. Joel Darling, executive producer of Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada, will be on hand.

The 14-hour national show, broadcast annually on Sportsnet, will feature all seven Canadian NHL teams in action, with events at Ship Point that will include kids’ games on a synthetic ice surface and concerts on adjacent stages.

Those passing by the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre Tuesday morning might have noticed something unusual – an artificial ice rink.

John Wilson, chair of the Victoria Hockey Legacy Society, says it was set up as a test ahead of it being set up for real for next month’s Hockey Day in Canada.

“It’ll be used down at Ship Point where the festivities will be,” Wilson said in a Zoom interview with CHEK News. “Wednesday, Jan. 17, it’ll activate into a festival celebration of hockey down there. There’ll be the synthetic ice service, there’ll be three ball hockey courts and a lot of community activity going on.”

The festival is a little over a month away, with it set to take place from Jan. 17-20.

As part of the event, the Stanley Cup will be in Victoria, Ron MacLean will broadcast from the city, and there will be a number of both ticketed and free events.

A full rundown of events can be found on the Hockey Day in Canada website.

Being ice-less, a Zamboni is not required for cleaning the surface.

“A squeegee and a sweep is what it takes,” said Barlow-Lee.

The rink will be used during the Hockey Day in Canada week for games featuring Island youth teams and for clinics conducted by B.C. Hockey.

The rink, valued at $100,000, is owned by the Victoria Hockey Legacy Society and answered the question of how to have outdoor skating for the event in Canada’s mildest winter climate. The synthetic skating surface has an expected lifespan of 30 years, 15 years on one side and another 15 on the obverse side. The rink will be shared as a community asset following Hockey Day in Canada with envisioned use such as at future Canada Days.

There will also be three ball hockey rinks constructed adjacent to the artificial ice surface rink to host youth games.

The four-day festival of hockey will conclude with the day-long nationally Sportsnet-broadcast and Ron MacLean-hosted final day on Jan. 20, which will be wrapped around broadcasts of all seven NHL teams in action and also a Victoria Royals versus Kamloops Blazers WHL junior game at 4 p.m. Following the Royals game at the Memorial Centre will be the celebrity Alumni Classic game at 7:30 p.m. featuring the likes of MacLean, Kevin Bieksa, Elliotte Friedman, Wendel Clark, Cassie Campbell-Pascall, Lanny McDonald, Darcy Tucker, Kirk McLean, Nathan Lafayette, Brian Burke, Greg Adams and Canucks mascot Fin. Tickets are on sale at the event website.

The budget to host Hockey Day in Canada is $850,000, according to the Victoria legacy society. The province and Destination Greater Victoria are contributing $100,000 each. The City of Victoria is giving $100,000 in cash and another $100,000 in in-kind services such as bleachers and stages for the concerts that are planned as part of the festivities. The rest will come from corporate sponsorships.

In celebration of Hockey Day in Canada being hosted in Victoria this weekend, Munro’s Books is hosting a special book signing with three very familiar faces: Ron MacLean, Ken Reid, and Brian Burke.

Tell him to leave his shirt on this time.

He appears to have left that out of his memory;

Ryan and Laing have retired to Victoria and Pascall to Parksville. Robson, who began his sports broadcasting career in Port Alberni calling the play-by-play for the Athletics basketball dynasty, is retired on the Lower Mainland. MacLean, who lived in Victoria for a year as kid, is based in Toronto and will join the regular Hockey Night in Canada panel on Sportsnet on Saturday from Victoria.

“It seems every 30 years I come back to Victoria — as a four-year-old in 1964, for the Commonwealth Games in 1994 and now Hockey Day in Canada in 2024,” he said.

IMO Maclean has no business sitting with the rest of them who are truly 'legendary' broadcasters; the guy is a whining back stabbing weasel on his best day. I've met Robson and Pascall and literally bumped into Tim Ryan in James Bay, where he lives. I actually knew who he was mainly because I'm old enough to remember him from his time on NBC, lol. He and Robson were outstanding people, gracious and easy to talk to you. Maclean should just  go back to the little town in Germany where he was born and stay there. And YES he should keep his shirt on.....

Wow, I had no idea Tim Ryan lived here. I remember all those Sunday morning  hockey broadcasts in the early 1970s.

Yeah there was a T-C article on him and retiring here perhaps 3-4? years ago. He was born in Winnipeg so retiring to the west coast is perfectly understandable. Smart man..... :)

Thursday morning began with former 16-season NHLer, Stanley Cup-champion and Island-resident Andrew Ference jumping in to help former NHL great Wendel Clark sweep the snow off the $100,000 synthetic-ice rink at Ship Point so young players could skate on it through the day.

Weather be damned. Victorians, famously averse to snow, have found a way through the most unexpected of conditions for the 2024 Hockey Day in Canada week. All events have sold out. That includes the Legends of Broadcasting Hot Stove on Tuesday night, the 800-plus gala on Thursday night at the Victoria Conference Centre, tonight’s NHL alumni and celebrity game and Saturday’s WHL game between the Victoria Royals and Kamloops Blazers, both at Save-on-Foods Memorial Centre.

Also sold out and packed, despite the inclement weather, was the taping for this week’s 32 Thoughts Podcast on Thursday afternoon at Wicket Hall in the Strathcona Hotel.

Greg Adams quipped that with Lanny McDonald having to pull out of playing in the Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada Celebrity and Alumni Classic Game, he was suddenly the oldest player on the ice in front of 7,006 fans Friday night at Save-on-Foods Memorial Centre.

“Time flies,” said Adams.

It was the first time on skates in six years for the 63-year-old WHL Victoria Cougars graduate and 10-season NHLer from Duncan. Adams was part of the game that featured former NHLers Andrew Ference, Kevin Bieksa, Wendell Clark, Kirk McLean, Bill Ranford, Nathan Lafayette, Darcy Tucker along with Hockey Night in Canada commentators Ron MacLean, Evanka Osmak, David Amber, Ken Reid and Jennifer Botterill.

For the record, Team Tucker beat Team McDonald 7-5.

Behind the bench for Team Tucker were coaches Kelly Hrudey, Brian Burke, Elliotte Friedman and Cassie Campbell-Pascall. Coaching for Team Lanny McDonald were former Island NHLers Geoff Courtnall and Robin Bawa and another former B.C. NHLer in Danny Gare.

It’s Hockey Day in Victoria and our cups runneth over

Both the Stanley Cup and the Grey Cup are in town as Greater Victoria marks Hockey Day in Canada today with a festival at Ship Point. Plus, Victoria is featured during a 12.5-hour broadcast of NHL hockey games.
