Among the individuals specially mentioned who selflessly donated to the project was steeplechase athlete Butterworth, who donated $1,000 of her $1,700 prize money she won at the Harry Jerome Classic in June.
Butterworth, who attended Ballenas Secondary, recalled the time when she trained at the old cinder track.
"When I started here, the track was actually around 406 metres long, so they would have to wheel it before every practice to know where the start and finish line was because the track was not the correct length," said Butterworth. "And then as the season would go on, every year, the grass would grow in from the inside and in from the outside. So, our actual dirt track would get shorter, fewer and fewer and we'd have more grass patches and we'd be avoiding more and more grass as it went on. So, yeah, it was a pretty unruly facility but built a lot of tough athletes."
Butterworth is now excited for the future of the sport in Parksville Qualicum Beach.
