Yes, trees are always beautiful and must be protected, when on someone else’s property.

Pickleball sounds like an absolute scourge on communities and if it is widely considered disruptive to communities, then it should be controlled and sited with caution. Inside courts seem like the best idea, or on large rec properties like Juan de Fuca where they can be located out of sight and earshot of residences.

Why did everybody rush to build these things, then?

In some cases, they might have been converted tennis courts, and almost all cases, they put them in what was already a park.  But everyone seems surprised by the noise.

Lack of common sense, and an indifference to the needs of others. The players know they’re a nuisance but don’t seem to care.

Maybe just real bad parks planning staff and admin.  Before making the decision they might have just googled it up to see if there were problems elsewhere.  Since there seem to be problems EVERYWHERE.

The Post report zoomed in on a single neighbourhood, home to Pickleball Noise Relief, a residents’ group formed to fight the problem

“It made me an angry man, sometimes. I had a shorter fuse because it was harder to concentrate or to focus on things,” a resident told the newspaper. “I hear them even when they’re not playing, sometimes” — a phenomenon so common that Pickleball Noise Relief members call it “phantom pops.”

It’s also very sporadic,” the resident added. “I’m always anticipating I’m going to be hearing the noise — even when they’re not playing.”

While considered safe, the highfrequency sound is, simply put, annoying. And decibel levels and measurements cannot capture the sheer scope of what is transpiring in these neighbourhoods.

“Two factors — the high pitch of a hard paddle slamming a plastic ball and the erratic, often frantic rhythm of the smacks — also contribute to its uncanny ability to drive bystanders crazy,” says a report in The New York Times. At the 2023 edition of NoiseCon, an American meet-up that seeks to create quiet spaces, the conversation was dominated by Pickleball. “Pickleball is the topic of the year,” said the vice chair for the conference.

Your local government will bless a supportive housing facility appearing next door to your home in a quiet neighbourhood. Pickle ball court bad planning feels petty to complain about by comparison, but I can sympathize with people who live near these courts.

North Saanich is exploring a suite of new ideas for the future of Wain Park, including the possible addition of a splash pad and repurposing the former pickleball courts as either a multi-sport space or a covered community gathering area.

staff report that will go before council at the district’s Monday night meeting revisits “emerging directions” for both Wain Park and Noble Garden Park, offering cost estimates, siting considerations and concepts that will be refined through another round of public engagement.

The idea comes more than a year after council voted in May 2024 to permanently close the Wain Park pickleball courts after years of noise complaints from nearby residents.

Translation:
You know how we could deal with this pickleball controversy fairly quickly and easily without needing to spend another fortune? Yeah, no, we're going to drag this out and make it very expensive. And we'll probably create a bunch of new controversies while we're at it.

Has there ever been a sport as contentious and socially triggering as this? Maybe it’s just a bad sport for society, that should be relegated to private interior courts?
