Most people at 66 are thinking about retirement. Stan Peterec is thinking about combinations, the punching and kicking kind.

 

The Victoria martial arts legend and former two-time world champion — is lacing up for another professional fight at Summer Slugfest IX on August 30 at Royal Athletic Park.

 

“I’ll be 67 in four months,” Stan says with a grin. “Everybody tells me I’m crazy.”

 

They might have a point. Peterec’s fought professionally for 51 years, won world titles, trained countless fighters, and just to make Guinness sit up and take notice, has never once been knocked out. Or even knocked down.

“This is the first WBC title fight in the history of British Columbia,” says promoter Jason Heit of Champ Promotions. “We’re thrilled to bring that to Victoria, and even better, to have a hometown fighter in the main event.”

 

That fighter is Brandon Colantonio, a Victoria heavyweight who’ll take on Jaye Byard, Canada’s reigning heavyweight champion, for the vacant WBC USA Bridgerweight title.

 

“It would change my life,” says Colantonio. “It would make me a world contender, and I believe I’m the best in the world when I fight to my ability.”

 

Byard has knocked out eight straight opponents, but Colantonio isn’t intimidated. If Byard is looking for a ninth straight KO, Colantonio says he’s come to the wrong place.

“I’m gonna squash the pipe dream,” he says with a grin.

Anthony Joshua knocked out Jake Paul in the sixth round of their heavyweight fight on Friday night.

 

The two-time heavyweight champion displayed why he is one of the sport’s elite punchers when he dropped the fading Paul twice in the fifth round.

 

Sensing the YouTuber was finished, Joshua rocked him with a right uppercut early in the sixth. The native of England then floored Paul with a combination to the head.

 

Although Paul (12-2) reached his feet again, Joshua (29-4, 26 KOs) finally crushed Paul’s upset dream when he dropped him a fourth time with a right to the head. Referee Christopher Young counted Paul out at 1:31 of the round in front of a capacity crowd of 19,600 at the Kaseya Center.

Great promo. His company MVP went home with the bigger paycheque. Jake Paul is the best thing for boxing since Tyson. Even willing to have his jaw broken to revive the spectacle. Respect from me. He is probably only playing the heel and people are gobbling it up.

So I guess from now on the numbered UFC fights, (about once a month) including the one at the White House in June will be streamed on Paramount+ for no extra charge.  No more PPV.

 

Which is a change from the last 20 years.

Anthony Joshua, the Nigerian-British boxer and former world heavyweight champion, was involved in a car accident that killed two other passengers in Nigeria on Monday.

The Lagos state commissioner for information, Gbenga Omotosho, confirmed the accident in a post on X, adding that the government had sent ambulances to the crash site. Local media reports say the boxer has been transferred to a hospital. The cause of the crash remains unclear.
