And traffic lights are the issue here too. Bloating a section to 8 lanes would probably make things worse. The two lights leaving town, Tillicum in particular. Next would be the two leading onto the actual Colwood crawl and the new one at Atkins and then the one at the 6 mile. All of those back up the off ramp. Now more because of construction but it’s still a choke point.

Oh, I asked for it to calculate from malahat summit to SOUTH of Nanaimo - where the bypass peels off from the old highway.

Right, but AI said 19 to 22, when there are 29 controlled crossings between Mill Bay and the Highway 19 cutoff.

That’s a massive discrepancy.

The story goes that when the Nanaimo parkway was built, the original plan included full overpasses and interchanges. But they went over budget, and these items were cut before the project was complete.

The ministry did a study in 2021 that recommended immediately replacing at least a few of the lights with proper interchanges but nothing has been done since.

Here is the link to Parkway interchange report: Nanaimo Parkway and Nanoose Bay Corridor Study 2021 (PDF, 32MB). The BC Conservatives in Nanaimo ran last election on getting three interchanges built, but they lost there as well as the general election. https://nanaimonewsn...anaimo-parkway/

The article shows their pledge but nobody was available to state which interchanges for the press.

Free advice. Next election get someone well versed to speak to the media when requested and make sure your candidates understand well their promises. If done correctly, you might actually win next time.

Has there been a Duncan bypass study?

The West(long) would be the only bypass not bisecting FN reservations. At $151M ($2004), and taking into account inflation, maybe the BC Cons should look into tolling such a route and revenue sharing with the Cowichan Tribes. The NDP are going to accuse the BC Cons of wanting tolls (which both parties should) anyway, so why not go for it and maybe get the provincial credit rating back a bit better.

It opens up huge development potential that can make the adjacent landowners pretty wealthy very quickly. In the case of FNs, it allows development partners as well, bringing big revenue to a nation.

Development will generate lots of tax revenue down the line, paying down a project like that relatively quickly.
