The WNBA is not growing like it should.
In 2024, the WNBA recorded its most-watched regular season in 24 years. However, the top 16 most-watched games all featured rookie sensation Caitlin Clark.
On the surface, the disparity in popularity between Clark and the other players is not a negative. There was a time when Tiger Woods was that much more popular than any other golfer. Likewise, Ronda Rousey and Conor McGregor were also mainstream attractions when the UFC was still mostly a niche sport.
The difference is that the interest in Woods, Rousey, and McGregor eventually elevated the interest in those around them. That is not the case in terms of Clark and the WNBA.
National ratings for the WNBA dropped 55% after Clark's injury this season. Clark returned on Saturday after a three-week absence and viewership predictably skyrocketed.
The Fever's win over the Liberty averaged 2.2 million viewers, marking the third most-watched WNBA game on ABC ever.

Caitlin Clark may be a fan favorite, receiving nearly 1.3 million fan votes for the WNBA All-Star Game, but her peers are less enthused with the Indiana Fever star.
Clark was named one of two captains for the July 19 WNBA All-Star Game at Gainbridge Fieldhouse because she received the most fan votes. Minnesota's Napheesa Collier finished second in the fan vote and will serve as the other captain.
But in the player vote, Clark was ranked ninth... among guards. ![]()

Comedian Shane Gillis tricked the audience at the 2025 ESPY Awards by introducing his friend’s wife, Brittany Hicks, as a fictional four-time WNBA All-Star.
Her introduction prompted applause from the audience. The problem is that she’s not a four-time All-Star. In fact, she’s never played in the WNBA.
And the audience had no clue.
“Four-time WNBA All-Star Brittany Hicks is here, everybody, give it up for Brittany,” Gillis excitedly declared.
After a short pause, Gillis continued: “I’m joking around, that’s my friend’s wife. I knew none of you knew WNBA players.”

Diana Taurasi kept it real.
The self-titled three-episode docuseries premieres on Thursday, and Prime Video teased fans on Wednesday with a clip from the series where Taurasi details the struggle and grind of WNBA salaries during the days of her playing career.
“The f–king janitor at the arena made more than me,” she said.

While she quit spending her offseasons overseas in 2017, the majority of the league today still takes its talents outside the U.S. in the offseason to stay sharp and earn extra money, as foreign leagues can often pay players double what the WNBA does or more.
While the WNBA has more eyes than ever in 2025, the salaries haven’t necessarily aligned with how much attention the league gets. Taursi made $234,936 in her final WNBA season.

The minimum base salary for players in 2025 was $66,079 US. Under the new agreement, the minimum salary would be more like $300,000 US, the average would be $585,000 and the maximum would be $1.4 million, with a team salary cap of $7 million, according to The Associated Press.
Specifics still need to be finalized over the next few weeks as lawyers on both sides work on the new CBA.
