A group of Democratic lawmakers from Texas have requested Tesla to postpone the launch of its anticipated robotaxi service in Austin, citing public safety and trust concerns.

The lawmakers suggest waiting until September, aligning with the introduction of new autonomous-driving legislation.

The lawmakers’ letter, sent on Wednesday, advises that delaying the service, which CEO Elon Musk hinted could start as early as this Sunday, would be in the public’s best interest.

So have we gone back to it being good to be a Tesla stockholder now?

I'm tired of pretending I don't own any.

Tesla (TSLA) has finally confirmed the Robotaxi service launch date, which is 22nd June. The automaker started sending event invite emails to selected Early Access riders.

These Early Access riders are almost from the same group of original Full Self-Driving (FSD) beta testers. Since these beta testers already have experience using FSD and are comfortable with the system, it’s better to have them try the new Unsupervised Robotaxi service before the public.

Although Elon Musk has been critical of geofenced autonomous cars and robotaxi services in the past, Tesla is beginning its Robotaxi service in a geofenced area in Austin, Texas. The reason is safety.

Tesla’s long-overdue robotaxi is finally hitting the streets this weekend, but the rollout may face some roadblocks.

The Elon Musk-led electric vehicle company is expected to roll out robotaxis in Austin, Texas, on June 22, with the first driverless trip from the factory to a customer house expected on his birthday, June 28.

Musk shared news of the tentative debut in a post on social media platform X last week.

Here’s what we know about the Tesla event so far.

When and where

The launch will include a limited number of Tesla vehicles debuting in Austin on June 22. The initial rides will be in the Model Y and not the CyberCab that was unveiled in October.

What if we realize we actually really dislike these vehicles on our roads?

Remember when all the rage was downtown living?

Remember when all the rage was small, urban low gas consuming vehicles?

Remember when the poor guy was the mechanic and the rich guy the office worker?

Remember when electric cars were supposed to immediately revolutionize the auto industry, to a point where governments believed that by 2026 20% of all sales -must- be EVs?

Know it all.

Our government is still on with the 20% figure by January.

Waymos are very popular. We like them.

Nobody shares cabs or Ubers with strangers now. Not going to change with Robotaxis.

I think the entire biz model has a lot of potential. A car is now an asset for real. If you own a detailing service get ready to streamline a daily car clean service that will be busy from 3-5. Buy a robo taxi for your office commuter and instead of paying for parking, your car is out working for you. If I wasn’t house poor I would be first in line here to buy one. Especially to get it before the taxes and regulations kill it for small business. Then again we don’t even have Uber yet. The car will be the first mass adopted robot. That I know. It’s already a major purchase and a chauffeur is a great roll for a robot. There’s many positives to a robot vehicle. The negatives are if the government embeds themselves in it. Like mandatory purchases or making it so only these cars can be on the road or having access and control over them. There’s a real lack of talk around robot ethics right now.

Robot ethics like does it choose to run over two people or four when those are the only two choices? That’s a pretty rare case.
