The Victoria Curling Club is looking to raise millions of dollars to help complete much-needed renovations to its building, which hasn’t seen a major upgrade since 1952.

The curling club is now just one of two across Greater Victoria that still offers curling, and a group representing the club has come up with a $5 million plan to help keep the lights on and ice set.

“Behind that wall at the back is about $750,000 worth of mechanical equipment that actually allows you to have ice,” said Victoria Curling Club president Paul Addison on Friday.

Wearing helmets, seems odd.

Only one guy wasn't, I had never seen anyone wearing a helmet curling before, maybe it's a new thing.

I’ve had many older friends and relatives whose path to death began with a fall. If I was a senior citizen playing a game on ice I would be wearing a helmet.

I never wore a helmet when I was riding a bike as a kid, I do now though.

The Campbell River Blind Curling Club is getting ready to host the BC Provincial Championship in the new year. “With only four teams in the province, it is our time to host,” said head coach Bruce Laurie. “With the competition here, we are hoping that playing with home field advantage, it gets us in the top two.” The tournament will be at the Campbell River Curling rink and will run from Jan. 8 to 9. Four teams, including Campbell River, will compete, with Prince George, Vancouver, and Kelowna filling out the tournament. The top two teams in the championship will win two places in the Western Canada Championship later in the year.

Look I’m not opposed to anyone participating in the sport of their choice.

But why not a sport where they can use their natural advantage? Like hunting. Or at least tracking.
