The three-decade-old waterslide at Saanich Commonwealth Place will remain closed until it can be replaced by another one next year.

It has not been in use since September 2023.

The waterslide was built in 1993 — when the Royal Oak-area recreation complex was built for the 1994 Commonwealth Games — and has reached the end of its lifespan, the District of Saanich said Friday.

“After reviewing information from engineers and the manufacturer, the district has determined that replacing the waterslide is necessary and will be releasing a request for proposals to procure a new slide later this month,” the district said.

^ That's a good idea.  Might not be huge uptake at that price, but it's cool idea anyway.

Used to love getting the McDonald’s coupons. Never wasted those.

Havel uses throughout his essay a highly common situation: the manager of a grocery store, who places in the window, among fruits and vegetables, a slogan: “Workers of the world, unite!”. What makes him do that? Most probably, his action does not reflect a deep loyalty to the regime, it is rather an automatic one. That doesn’t mean that there is no implicit significance: by doing that, the greengrocer states that he behaves in the manner expected from him and that he has the right to be left in peace. He becomes a piece in a much larger puzzle, in which ideology is crucial.

“The primary excusatory function of ideology, therefore, is to provide people, both as victims and pillars of the post-totalitarian system, with the illusion that the system is in harmony with the human order and the order of the universe,” explains Havel. Ideology creates a parallel reality, by substituting the requirements of life with the requirements of the system. In this new world, fed by rituals, the power of bureaucracy is called the power of the people, the repression of culture is called the development of culture, persecution becomes eliberation. With his poster, the greengrocer declares that he accepts this new reality. The regime survives as long as people inside it live within the lie.

Havel called it Post Totalitarianism.

The good news is after suffering jail for his writing he did become president.

The only witness to this apparent incident was the 10 year old daughter.

Nobody else in the change room reported anything unusual, and the mother never saw the man in question.

Strangely, not a single other person in the entire Commonwealth Pool facility reported seeing a large, hairy man in a tiny, female child's sparkly bikini walking around, swimming in the pool, or otherwise utilizing the facility.

To say there are some rather important details missing from this story would be an understatement.

But the recreation centre manager wrote to the mother two or three times to say the incident was acceptable.

It could be entirely fabricated. But the point is what VW points out. As Blair reacts naturally to what sounds like a ridiculous story. The authority has the opposite reaction….

I guess if there was no actual large, hairy guy in a child's tiny sparkly bikini walking around Commonwealth Pool, all we have is what we all knew we already had, which is that official Saanich Municipal policy is ridiculous in its drafted form, and equally ridiculous Saanich Employees as they endeavour to apply that ridiculous official Municipal policy.

A large, hairy guy in a tiny, sparkly child's bikini, walking around Saanich Commonwealth Pool would very likely be seen by at least one other person.  But in this case "he" was seen by not a single soul beyond the 10 year old child, who appears to be the singular creator of this tale.

I don't believe the story to be factual.

I do believe that Saanich Municipality needs to give their head a shake, and rewrite their current, ridiculous policy on appropriate gender mixing in public clothes changing facilities, especially as they involve children.

Default should be not to believe the story. At least not the details. But you can look at video and pictures of Brian winning Miss America and see all the petite female contestants smiling and clapping to understand that this is going on in plain sight. This particular story could be rage bate and entirely fake. But it doesn’t change the reality we are in right now.

Speaking of video, the pool would have looked at its surveillance footage to determine whether or not someone marching the man’s description entered the change room. What happened inside there would be no proof of, but they would know he entered.

Know it all.
