Canadian residents continue to make fewer trips to the United States, according to the latest travel report from Statistics Canada. Return automobile trips to the U.S. by Canadian residents declined in December for the 12th consecutive month.

At 1.3 million, returns by auto are now down 30.7 per cent from the same month a year ago. Travel by air is also down. There were 470,700 Canadian resident return trips by air from the U.S. in December, 18.7 per cent fewer compared to the year prior. Return trips from other countries increased by 10.4 per cent to 1.1 million.

U.S. residents are also holding off on travel to Canada, albeit by smaller percentages. There was an 8.9-per-cent decrease in U.S. residents arriving by air, and a nine-per-cent decrease in those arriving by automobile. Non-resident trips to Canada by people coming from places other than the United States increased 6.6 per cent in December, compared to the same month in 2024.

U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday said the ​Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement — the trade pact also known as CUSMA — is not relevant for the U.S., but Canada wants it, as he pushed for companies to bring manufacturing back to American soil.

 

"There's no real advantage to it — it's irrelevant," Trump said. "Canada would love it. Canada wants it. They need it."
