I was watching today as private security was following the parks staff out of Beacon Hill Park back towards their vehicles.

The carbon emissions alone from the security car following around park staff should be enough to justify clearing the tents.  Climate emergency after all!

With all the road closures in BHP, I am surprised a security car was able to make its way through the park.

butchart should Bill itself as a private park. $25/month subscription. Could be lucrative since our best free parks are beng destroyed by Lisa helps.

Don’t be too hard on the campers.  It’s only 98% of them giving the other 2% a bad name.

Some of the roads are open now.  I walked through there this afternoon.  Noticed there is still a tent in the Garry Oak meadow just east of the playground parking lot. Our friend Shea Smith has a giant tent near the bleachers by the gravel playing field complete with security fence enclosing various bits of junk.  Also noticed one of the tents along Douglas sports a large debris field that features one of those game tables with rod operated paddles.

Yes, a fussball table! I saw that too.
There was another tent, brand new that had a working air compressor (that’s what it looked like to me). I’m not sure for what purpose. It was next to another large tent that had a screen door and had chairs inside. Too tidy to be campers so I am guessing that it is a safe injection site. It’s on top of the rocky section behind the Douglas tent city. I haven’t been in a few days so I don’t know if it’s still there.

We took a walk into the Arbutus Drive end of things today. The only folks on the green playing field were the Chek news guy and the fellow he was interviewing. One person was walking on the road. Not a single picnic table by the playground was being used (this was when the sun was out). Very few people at the playground. No one in that end of the park, I suspect due to the road closure. It's the Dead Zone.

went for a walk through central park today, although the park was busy with people enjoying the holiday.. the tents seem to be increasing, there's sun shade tent right on the corner all set up with BBQ and shelves.. i also noticed a tent filled with bike tires and the mess is growing even an umbrella hanging over blocking the sidewalk...

though i did see a cop car drive past...

i still don't understand why this is allowed...  this is not desperate people just spending a night in a tent while trying to get through covid.. this is spread out social gatherings with music playing everyone sitting on comfy computer chairs and furniture....  ofcourse they don't want to live indoors when you can have these sorts of freedoms

I think even the SJWs on council might have a hard to believing this myth anymore.

Safe injection site?? Or possibly an advance polling station for the byelection?

Man, reading this forum is incredibly depressing. Don't you guys have anything better to do than to ***** about people who are battling addiction or struggling to survive? Like really, I live closer to Our Place than literally anyone in Victoria (okay, to be fair, my roommate is a couple feet closer) and I'm going about my life just fine. Maybe redirect your focus towards actual solutions (like housing or mental health treatments) rather than complain that the CoV hasn't yet kicked people out of BHP so you can look at flowers and ducks while not having to think about those less fortunate than you.

I read this forum as it is the only resource for up-to-date news on local urban design, architecture, etc. but I'm frankly disgusted at the selfish attitudes expressed by most users here,

Wasn't it closed down for a couple of reasons? Think there were zoning problems and electrical problems with the temporary housing. Don't know what's going on there now. Isn't it part of the ALR?

Beats me. I initially supported the Farmlands Trust on their purchase of the farm.

It was and probably still is part of the ALR which surely complicates things. I think LeBlanc needed to have more housing available but was denied.. so he sold it to BC Housing. I presume it’s not operational at the moment. Ironic.

They already do that. It’s about $5 a month, and it comes with discounts too.

you are awfully accepting of the terrible status quo now.  that's the problem.

we've offered no end to potential solutions here in these 949 pages.

some of these people are not "less fortunate" - they are lazy good for nothing losers leaching off the system and making the quality of life worse for all of us including the ones that really need help.

People are desperate for solutions, which are a large part of this discussion.

The situation in Victoria created and fostered by the current administration is so bad that it’s garnering national attention. Yesterday morning, as an example of Victoria’s image problem, I was driving in from Gold River towards Campbell River and guess what one of the news topics was on a news segment of a radio program? A needle attached to a handrail in Victoria’s world-renowned Beacon Hill Park.

Residents of this city are being victimized, assaulted, threatened and with increasing rates displaced due to fears and concerns related to the above. Saying those who’ve experienced serious criminality or intimidation or who are seeing their neighbourhoods slide in safety, appearance and community spirit as complainers is missing the point entirely. Your city is hurting, badly, and Victorians need it to stop.

And then we have the business community that has seen its membership falter due to covid, and which is now forced to implement costly security measures just to keep the doors open and to protect their workers and staff. Is that not happening? Is it all just a joke when Gordie Dodd and his son say they’re living a literal nightmare (Love Dodd’s word, not mine)? When business owners are intimidated and told they’ll be hurt? When police have so few resources that they can’t attend B&Es or when a suspect is caught the legal system has him or her on the street hours later?

Your City Hall has had a window shot up, weeks after CTV had their window shot up. And it’s all good? That’s just survival and we should look kindly upon it?

It's decent value if you can make it 4+ times (eg once per season). But don't expect it to be like a park, especially for kids. No picnics and no running around on the lawns (except the one where the fireworks are viewed from - normally).

Well worth the price for the annual pass as it’s about the only park like setting my wife feels comfortable walking with my kid these days. No random attacks on unsuspecting people, needles on hand rails, or cars getting broken into. The restrictions are temporary (as much as we can call the new normal temporary) Call it elitism if you want, but I’ll continue to pay to access that kind of safety for my family.

do people really not understand that the serious issues being caused are really mostly by a small portion of the homeless?  i'd venture that less than 15 or 10% of the people in tents or in our converted and shelters present safety and crime issues.  but they are a serious problem.

The current situation is bad for the park, bad for the people living near the park, and bad for the tenters living in the park. Acknowledging that isn't selfish, it's just based in reality.
