Here is another one of these articles.

Rod Nall had finally found housing on the mid-Island for the first time in a decade.

“This is my home,” said Rod Nall, a longtime homeless Parksville resident.

Since the 59-year-old and 21 others were moved into the former V.I.P. motel, which has opened as supportive housing.

“To see the good these people are doing, it’s beautiful,” said Nall.

The shelter named Ocean Place has been operated by BC Housing for two months without any apparent problems. Yet just days before Christmas, they are worried they will soon be closed.

“It’s heartbreaking,” said Jennifer Hislop, Manager at Ocean Place.

Why has Rod Nall been homeless for 10 years?

And it’s a bit tough to believe that the “users” in the population at that hotel “don’t use here”.

"Downtown Victoria resident Alex" is an example of someone who could benefit from getting off his ass, and finding a job.

And downtown could simultaneously benefit from him getting his sh*t out of the street and off the private property he's fu&*ing up.

City of Victoria opens warming centres for the night, as shelters reach a short-staffed capacity

The city was able to hire more staff capable and willing to manage the site

https://www.vicnews....affed-capacity/

We “housed” everybody that were in parks earlier in the year but now we have three warming centres open for all those sleeping rough.

Who knew we’d just get more homeless?

We probably have some newcomers, but mainly these are the folks that failed out of housing.  Didn't want to follow the few rules there are, were disruptive or threatening to others being housed.

We knew this would happen but made it our only approach anyways.

As I said earlier, this guy needs to get a job, not a free hut.

Krista Loughton is one step closer to her dream of providing inexpensive shelters for people experiencing homelessness.

Loughton is part of a group called the Community Alliance for Sheltering Alternatives that is hoping to build “Conestoga” huts — named for Conestoga wagons that carried pioneers across the U.S. to the western states — for the unhoused in Greater Victoria.

By Monday, the group’s fundraising campaign had raised $5,300 — more than enough to build a prototype of the round-roofed hut. “We want to show people that it works,” Loughton said.

The huts are warmer and more substantial than a tent and have been used in cities in the U.S., including Eugene, Oregon, where about 200 huts are providing temporary shelter.

Each hut has 60 square feet of living space and a door that locks.

“It gives them a home base where they can protect their belongings,” Loughton said. “Unhoused people are handcuffed to their belongings. They can’t really get things done. Most people don’t understand what a barrier that is to improving your life. You can’t just leave your sleeping bag and tent unattended.”

Although it has the money, the biggest challenge facing the group is finding a location for the first hut, said Loughton.

Because it’s a community initiative, the huts have to go on private property.

Loughton said the ideal spot is a church parking lot. “My dream is to have one on every church parking lot in the Capital Regional District.”

The first Conestoga hut will be built for a homeless man and his dog, Lulu, who have been sleeping rough on Government Street despite snow and sub-zero temperatures.

Krista Loughton is a perfect example of someone suffering from white knight syndrome.

Dont taxpayers already pay Our Place for storage for homeless? That was one of our worseship’s obsession for a while and I know it happened.
They all read from the same « bible » unfortunately they never think to look and see if these dogmas worked where they were tried, and in this case whether it’s already being done here. There is no end to the fleecing of the taxpayer in Victoria.

It bugs me that the TC doesn’t ask these questions. They aren’t doing their job. Just more virtue signaling.

As I said earlier, this guy needs to get a job, not a free hut.

Pretty easy to say from the comfort of your (parents' ;-) ) heated basement...

Alex seems to be able-bodied, and one can infer from his comments that his drinking problem is behind him.  But, where does he leave his stuff while he's looking for work?  Where does he leave it while he's at work?  Can he earn enough at his (probably?) entry-level/minimum wage job to afford a place to live in Victoria?  Yes, 'Our Place' might have storage available on a daily basis, but is it secure?  Where's he supposed to sleep for the first two weeks or month until he gets his first paycheque?

It sounds pretty easy and simple to just "get a job" - but some of the hurdles to be cleared are massive...

ETA: if Alex is serious, and able to follow through, some sort of transitional help is needed.  I can envision a small (6 units?) cluster of these 'conestoga huts' with toilet/shower/laundry/cooking facilities in close proximity. I think that you'd further need 24/7 support in the form of an outreach worker, and a clear entry/exit and life plan for the residents.  (ie: clean/sober, 'x' months to employment, and a 12? month stay limit...)   But, that all costs money.  how much are we, as a society willing to pay?

North Shore, actually it would be great if Alex comes to live with you and you can help to get him set up in a job and a house, You can lead by example and I am sure that you are willing so it would be great to hear your positive steps in your next post.

Huts with no bathroom facilities nearby is not the answer. And I hope that churches realize that. They probably do since this person wants one in every church parking lot but has not placed a single one yet.

Alex can manage with all the wrap-around supports.

Np: No, not at all.  But, he is here now.  And, if we move him to/back to, Quesnel, say, are the supports there for him to succeed?

We have housed hundreds months ago and by now, especially with all the wrap around supports available (assuming the social theory is correct) a lot of them should have gotten jobs and been able to move out of the the housing making room for people like Alex.

On the other hand, it is possible that this very expensive housing first experiment is a serious failure.

It would be nice to know how many hundreds of people have been successfully reintegrated into society.

Agreed.

OTOH, how many of those were ready for re-integration?  Not much point in trying to re-integrate an active tweaker..

"And, if we move him to/back to, Quesnel, say, are the supports there for him to succeed?"

If they are an active tweaker with no interest to re-integrate then why must he be in Victoria - yes back to Quesnel or wherever else is cheaper on taxpayers.

This is why comprehensive ID and triaging of each and every person is needed to ensure the correct approach is matched to each person.
