Do you have a source for this? Exact numbers per capita seem hard to find. Count systems and who is counted as a homless person seems to vary. as well as the definition of the city region.

I appreciate all the information.  As you indicated your calculation is at best an educated estimate. What is the definition of homelessness in these examples? Do they consider the city or metro region? Just listing statistics that may not be comparable is not sufficient. My first question is what is the homeless population of Victoria per capita as a city and as a metro area.

This is the best data that I could find re Victoria area.

I’m not concerned about the number as a region or metro when they are all jammed into Victoria. All crammed into our 7.5 square miles. Or much less if I actually drew the boundary where they are all located in CoV.

There are zero homeless shelters in Oak Bay, Esquimalt, Colwood, North Saanich, Langford, Colwood etc. Saanich has 25 seasonal beds.

The definition of homeless is where people are living rough on the street or in parks or where they live in a shelter where they have no assigned permanent room with tenancy agreement. So I even except most Cool Aid residences from my tally.

I am also frustrated by the homeless situation downtown!

Making claims that may be exaggerated does little to move discussion forward or perhaps inform the uninformed if that is one of the goals.

It seems that BC housing is creating four more supportive housing locations to address this problem two outside the City of Victoria. See the bottom of the attached link..

There goes Moderation again. He is just another TV propaganda guy. No homeless stats is equal to there being no problem, He will argue trivial facts forever and then conclude that your points are never valid. He has done this repeatedly ( I am waiting for the prove I have done it repeatedly, but first define repeatedly)

Moderation is a troll. ignore him.

The situation downtown has little to do with homelessness.  Those that are hard to house will fail out of free housing and end back on the street. No amount of supportive housing is going to address this.  Addiction treatment and mental health support will help, but they too will only go so far.

It is really very simple.  If we insist on putting those that cannot look after themselves in charge of their own affairs, then we guarantee a growing homeless population.  We also guarantee more pain, suffering and death all in the name of compassion.

Where did I say there were no homeless stats? I included a link to Victoria stats. I agreed that we have a problem in downtown Victoria. Strong statements require strong support if they are represented as facts rather than an opinion.

We can all hold opinions but facts need considered support. Is one not allowed to question information that is presented as fact? Should we all accept what is said as fact without question?

I perhaps watch less TV than you do :)

In an effort to improve community access and establish the legacy of retired street community advocate Rev. Al Tysick, two Our Place outreach workers have hit the street in the society’s new Dandelion Street Outreach van.

A variety of resources and services will be delivered around the region five days a week starting at 6:30 a.m., said outreach worker Kia Ratt.

“All of our days are a bit fluid, and that’s the awesome nature of street outreach,” he said. “Generally, we’ll start the mornings with urns of coffee and bring it out to folks who’ve been super cold.”

The mobile service will provide members of the street community with clothes, transportation to appointments or a friendly conversation, each of which are vital for individual well being, Ratt said, adding the service has so far been “really well received.” Frequent stops will include Stadacona, Irving and Cecilia Ravine parks, Rock Bay and areas in Victoria’s downtown core.

So all the spaces in the former hotels - purchased with my tax dollars - are 100% full then I take it?

Thanks for the impressive list.

From the unsheltered to those in transitional  housing the CRD homeless count and housing needs survey for 2020 was the number was 1523.(See above link)

There is obviously a homeless challenge in Victoria and CRD region. As indicated by your list most locations are near downtown. Victoria.

By my count from the list there are at least 777 spaces currently available.not including those units without information and more to come.

From checking information for one of the support societies less than 10% of their clients seemed to have transitioned out of their services over a year period. That seems like a small number. I wonder what kind of evaluations are done by the funding agencies?

I obtained a list of all the BC Housing sites and operators in the CRD in 2020 and number of units to look at what the numbers were like and how it is distributed across the CRD. Not sure if this helps with compiling the info. the number of units is still accurate, but it does not have Tiny Town in north park and it does not include other housing that is not BC Housing (IE. John Howard has a housing site in Burnside Gorge), it does include the hotels. Hopefully this link works

1656 in the CoV vs. 107 in Saanich. Something's wrong with this picture.

It also appears someone has forgotten to count the spaces in Oak Bay.  <_<

edit: 844 Johnson seems to be a glaring omission from Downtown.

Based on Victoria's per capita shelter spaces, Saanich should have somewhere around 2100. I wonder why this isn't the case?  :whyme:

Based on North America per capita rates, we should have under 200.

There are an estimated 553,742 people in the United States experiencing homelessness on a given night, according to the most recent national point-in-time estimate (January 2017). This represents a rate of approximately 17 people experiencing homelessness per every 10,000 people in the general population.

https://endhomelessn...eral population.

Yet instead we have ten times that, and the highest in all of North America.

Or:

total of 7,655 individuals were identified as experiencing homelessness in the 2018 Report on Homeless Counts in B.C. This included 219 children who were under the age of 19 and accompanied by a parent or guardian.

https://bcnpha.ca/ti...-on-the-island/

We should have about 140 based on provincial numbers.  Yet we have taken on nearly fifteen times that figure.

According to that link just above, we had 1,884 homeless on the entire Island (12,000 square miles) in 2,018.  Since then we have taken in over that amount and put them all in the 7.52 square miles of the CoV.

By Toronto (2.93M population) standards:

Toronto has the largest shelter system in Canada, providing space for more than 7,200 people. The system includes 75 permanent shelters and 24-hour respite sites, and 26 temporary sites.

https://www.cbc.ca/n...ronto-1.6317072

We would have about 226 homeless in CoV.

So we have almost ten times more than "the city with the largest shelter system in the country".

Toronto has about one permanent shelter for every 39,000 residents.

We have about 10x that.
