Hundreds of millions of dollars are going into this, annually.

As our schools are under-resourced, music and extracurricular programs are being cut, and students are learning out of ‘temporary’ portables. Some of them can’t even get to school, because there are widespread school bus driver shortages, including regularly cancelled runs in SD62.

More often we are stuck with what other people vote for.  :(

A recent poll shows that a third of Canadians would support extending doctor-assisted suicide – or MAID – to the homeless and people whose sole condition is poverty.

That figure should serve as an indictment of Canada’s leadership but the reality is, our leaders will likely see it as an endorsement of their ideological push to expand euthanasia in Canada. MAID represented 3.8% of all deaths in Canada in 2021 and UN rights groups and disability rights groups have condemned this expanding practice.

But it doesn’t end there.

The Canadian government’s “safe supply” drug strategy not only is proving to be unsafe but actually indirectly fuelling and funding a deadly black market fentanyl trade. “Safe supply” from the government means giving taxpayer-funded tablets of hydro morphone – a more potent heroin alternative – to addicts.

A National Post investigation into the failures of Canada’s “safe supply” program prompted a fiery exchange on the floor of the House of Commons between Pierre Poilievre and the minister of addictions Carolyn Bennett.

The Tow Away Zone: What it’s like to live in a van in Greater Victoria

This UVic student finds himself speaking to millionaires at his day job—then sleeping in parking lots at night

Braedon drives a phlegmy-coloured 1990 Ford E-150 Club Wagon—and he lives in it too. When he welcomes me inside for morning coffee, he is parked outside the Chinese cemetery in Oak Bay, sandwiched between old graves and multi-million dollar homes. Just a bit further is a recess of the Pacific Ocean between the Juan de Fuca and Haro straits. In the most affluent neighbourhood in Victoria, there is no sign of the housing crisis, lest you happen to see the basement-suite student renters appear from side doors like mice—or Braedon’s van.

Inside the van home, I tell him (politely) there is something rather…hearse-like about it. His laugh filled all 40 square feet. He makes room for me, and by this I mean he folds his bed into a couch and tucks his pillow to the other side. We could maybe fit one more person, but we would all be shoulder-to-shoulder and any movement would entail someone’s rear in someone’s face.

The only viable positions are sitting, a 45-degree standing hunch or lying down on his couch/bed. But Braedon, six feet tall with a clean shave and mild bed head, looks more comfortable than crammed. In plaid pyjama pants and a mustard yellow hoodie, Braedon is giving me the authentic Sunday morning experience. Without moving from his seat, he flicks on his fan, the propane camping stove, and pulls out the morning essentials: a kettle, french press, thermos mugs, and local coffee grounds. On the bright side, not many people can brew coffee in bed.

Being referred to as a rodent, if you rent a suite, is a new one. I hadn’t heard that one before.

To anyone reading this, don’t let that sort of sentiment being you down. I lived in suites, most others I know did, too. The generations before us also did.

Know it all.

Canada Is Dying | Full Movie

Homelessness. Addiction. Surging violent crime. All in one of Western Civilization’s most prosperous societies. But how did we get here? And who’s to blame?

Kelowna encampment, twitter video:

https://twitter.com/...037539752476672

The encampment, located at the intersection of the Rail Trail and Richter Street, is currently home to approximately 150 people but is expected to explode in population as the weather warms up.

“It’s going to get crazy,” said April.

The site provides “temporary overnight housing,” and according to City of Kelowna bylaw regulations, residents are expected to vacate the site daily at 9 a.m., and completely remove all their belongings each Thursday for cleaning.

Over the winter the requirement to move was not enforced due to the cold.

The province is buying the Super 8 motel in Courtenay to provide sheltered housing.

A temporary-use permit application will be submitted to the municipality so the Cliffe Avenue motel can be used as housing, the province said.

It said in a news release that once residents have moved in, “B.C. Housing will begin exploring permanent housing options for the site and will engage with the community to discuss its long-term use.”

Those expected to move into the Super 8 have been living since the spring of 2020 in the Travelodge Courtenay, but the lease ran out in May and was only extended to June 30.

The province had tried to buy the Travelodge but could not come to terms with the owner, a B.C. Housing statement said.

A permanent nest of drug addicts and criminals is exactly what ever town wants.

I think they really mean: "B.C. Housing will begin pretending to listen while residents complain about the filth, disorder and crime that suddenly shows up their neighborhood, while trying to find the next neighbourhood to dump on for exploring permanent housing options and will engage with the community to discuss its long-term use.”

Typical wedge move.   Buy the property, completely not zoned for their intended usage, then pressure the municipality to allow it.

This is how it works in Clown World. You gotta filter everything with the “Two weeks to flatten the curve” lens.

And "housing first" and no-barrier shelters reduce policing costs, and other social costs and neighbourhood disruption.  Residents tend to "stabilize" in the free apartments we give them.  Right.
