Apparently, SaanichFD arrived to find the smouldering remains of a tent, and no injuries.
No clear explanation of what happened was forthcoming ... although I imagine details will eventually be squeezed out of those responsible.

Vic News:
The fire torched Walkus’ tent in which he had some clothing and other belongings including a jerrycan and butane torch he believes led to an explosion, the result of a poorly discarded cigarette he thinks may have caused the blaze.
“[Charles] immediately evacuated the tents closest to him when we ran down there,” said Brett. Minor damage was done to a neighbouring tent’s tarp but no one was injured.Brett said the camp has reached out to Saanich Fire Department asking to reload their fire extinguishers but was told that’s something that Saanich Fire Department “does not do.”

Times Colonist:
“The individual who was occupying the tent wasn’t in the tent at the time, but he advised our incident commander that he may have left a lit cigarette inside the tent,” Henson said.
He added that it’s fortunate the fire broke out during the day when there were people around to take notice and respond.

Is this enough to get it shut down or do legal barriers still exist? Serious question.

Between this and the incident this past week at the tent city in Nanaimo is it at least reasonable to admit that these places are not necessarily the safe havens the advocates claim them to be? Is there any chance the courts will take these incidents into consideration in making their decisions?

some would suggest that all the residents have had many warnings about the dangers. all residents are adults. all are free to move out. perhaps they consent to the danger.

I can't believe people smoke in a tent, never mind all that other stuff they have lying around!

Sadly, somebody would have to be critically injured, or die in order to simply vanquish Uptown Tent City ... and even then I have my doubts.
Of course, when somebody does get critically injured, or does die ... the residents of UTC will simply blame Saanich Fire Department for not re-charging their fire extinguishers for free.
With these folks, it's always somebody else's responsibility to take care of them, or somebody else's fault when something terrible happens.
They just want to sit in their tents and blitz out 24/7 ... and have Saanich taxpayers look after the details of life.

Headline in the Times-Colonist: "Fire at Saanich tent city put out by residents; no one hurt"
CHEK News: "Saanich tent city residents extinguish fire"
Shouldn't the headline be: "Fire caused by Tent City squatters; neighbourhood in danger"

With implements supplied by Saanich taxpayers.

Exactly. And reading the Times-Colonist article, it was actually the Saanich Fire Department that put the fire out:

the tc photo shows smoke all over the highway could have been anyone that called it in.

The real headline lies back in the Times Colonist on September 19, 2015, when the Mayor of Victoria offered 365 people $20 each to attend a meeting at the Crystal Garden.

Two months later just up the road on November 19th there was 10 tents on the lawn behind the Courthouse, and THAT was the beginning of what we still have today, three years later.

Cesspools of human waste, mud, standing water, rotting garbage and general filth - occupied by criminals, drug addicts, and the homeless.
What could go wrong?

Following this incident, wouldn't it appear negligent if the court were to rule that the camp would remain...
I am certain Ashley and Chrissy have assured the court that the incidents here and in Nanaimo are not indicative of the responsible and upstanding nature of tent city residents.

and would the court actually believe Chrissy when she has been proven to do all she can to stir up trouble between the camp and saanich fire and police along with refusing to follow saanich fire departments orders for safety.. if she followed the orders that were laid out this never would have happened
