A reminder that Sooke is following down the same route with permitted 24 hour tenting.
sooke's getting a 24/7 shelter with wrap-around supports and 2 meals per day.

Thank you for your thoughtful, reasoned opinions, as always AJ.I have to ask: Do you honestly think he (or anyone else) could sway anyone away from voting TV? I would think that he has to reach the other voters who have not been indoctrinated. I could be wrong. Politics have never been my thing, until I was forced into them.
You’re not wrong. The TV mob will vote en masse for any zombie carrying the flag. (We’ve already seen this happen but I won’t name names.) Motivating people to vote who ordinarily don’t bother is the only way to win.

Stop passing the buck on tent camps, Horgan tells municipalities
Horgan was asked about the ongoing conflict between campers and residents around Beacon Hill Park in Victoria, which along with Vancouver has received most of the media attention and money to buy hotels with food and other services for transients. Victoria council has declined to enforce its anti-camping bylaw due to COVID-19, which Horgan said is a mistake, and Mayor Lisa Helps has demanded the province buy more hotels after millions have already been spent to do that in the two cities.
“I appeal to the city of Victoria to step up with some genuine ideas, rather than just turning to other orders of government,” Horgan told reporters at a student housing announcement at the University of Victoria July 27. “There is a bylaw in place that says you can’t camp during the day, you have to fold up your camp in the morning. Victoria has chosen not to enforce that because they believe that in a pandemic, that would be ill-advised. I disagree with that, but that’s not my responsibility. The city is responsible for their bylaws and they can and should manage them.”

Social Development Minister Shane Simpson noted recently that urban tent camps often have a protest function where people who are already housed come out to demand more housing.
Another protest has derailed the province’s move to allow temporary hospital detention of young people treated for street drug overdoses for up to a week. Mental Health and Addictions Minister Judy Darcy confirmed July 27 that legislation to allow it has been withdrawn, as the B.C. Civil Liberties Association and the Union of B.C. Indian Chiefs were staging a Vancouver news conference to denounce it.

Of course they don't want young people getting better and being treated for addictions, less profit for the pimps.

Wow, what a show of resolve! I think they used to call that running at the first whiff of grapeshot. Remind me to call a press conference next time they propose to do something I don’t like.

Which is exactly why so many candidates use fear and hate in their campaigns, no stronger emotions to draw upon to get people to the polls.

I’m not sure whether you are recommending this as a strategy, but Victorians certainly have a legitimate fear of economic decline, business failure, increasing crime and perpetual traffic congestion, so maybe it applies.

We've already pointed out that Helps and the CoV council are a bunch of activists. BHP 24/7 camping is designed to create a catastrophe to be used as leverage to force housing to become non-market.

"start there not give Bernie Pauly a platform to back up her failing ideology that sounds great but produces the breakdown of society."
Obviously related to Pauly on the Sopranos!
And the term SJW is offensive to real Warriors..ya know..those that really risk their lives for our wellbeing. A more appropiat term would be SJT.
Social Justice Tw_ts. Just sayin', choose yer own vowel

Premier John Horgan says he disagrees with Victoria’s choice not to enforce bylaws prohibiting day camping in Beacon Hill Park, but the mayor says the city is just following the direction of the provincial health officer.
“There is a bylaw in place that says you can’t camp during the day,” Horgan said Monday during a press conference. “You have to fold up your camp in the morning. Victoria has chosen not to enforce that because they believe that in a pandemic, that would be ill-advised. I disagree with that, but that’s not my responsibility.”
But Victoria Mayor Lisa Helps said she is simply following the direction of Dr. Bonnie Henry, sent to all mayors, in not forcing the 100 people now camping out in Beacon Hill Park to leave during the day.
In the June 8 letter, Henry says that while encampments are not a desirable form of long-term housing, “clearing or moving encampments without providing shelter/housing immediately can cause people to disperse throughout the community and break connections with service providers.”
Affordable housing is in short supply, and services that people in shelters or camps might access during the day are on limited hours, if open at all, during the pandemic.
Helps said the city made the difficult decision, despite public criticism, to follow the advice of the provincial health officer and to “respect people’s human rights to shelter, particularly in a health pandemic.”
___________________
Helps said she has a “ton of respect” for the premier and can’t say what he was thinking when he made the comments, except to say “the premier is probably really frustrated just like everybody else, because it’s a really challenging thing to be a leader through a global health epidemic.”

Is it just my imagination? Or is 5-6PM feeding time for the peacocks maybe?

I was just walking through BHP today and noticed that I hadn’t seen peacocks in my last few visits there over the last week. So I went looking for them. I found two while in the past they were everywhere.
Is it just my imagination? Or is 5-6PM feeding time for the peacocks maybe?
Maybe the #MostVulnerable are eating them?

But have they gone the way of the John A Macdonald statue? Or maybe it is just a coincidence or my imagination.

They could have stepped on dirty needles and had their corpses whisked away at dawn so there are no witnesses (like said Sir John A. statue)...

Someone who has contacts in the public works yard said some of the peacocks are now in Ross Bay Cemetery. There's also one living in the Fairfield Plaza..

Under the Charter of Rights and Freedom, we simply cannot force people to go anywhere they do not want to.
But we should be able to prevent people from going where we don't want them to go
.
Yes, the camping bylaw should be enforced. I do not see that happening until the pandemic is over.
They were not enforcing the bylaw long before the pandemic came along and gave them something to blame rather than themselves.
