A couple of the "most vulnerables" were living it up in Sands parking lot last night. The police finally showed up - around 2:00 AM I would guess - and escorted them off the private property.

The comment about campers from France is interesting. The other day when I was stopped at the light by the Beacon Hill sign I noticed a group of six or seven young guys walking on the grass there, into the park. I commented to my husband, those guys definitely look French or Italian! We've been to France quite a few times, they have a "look". Maybe when the rains begin they won't be quite so keen.

By then they will have been given free housing...

A Sooke resident has written council following the opening of a shelter near the town hall.

I can't copy and paste the PDF text due to formatting issues (it gets all jumbled up when pasted and I can't export the document) but I'll include excerpts, and then link to the letter attachment below.

"A few months ago, a few of you told me how this homeless shelter would not be a detriment to our community because 'our homeless are different."

"Two brush fires in two weeks and now used needles were found in John MacGregor." [that's the park where a temporary shelter has been established, in what months ago was a gym]

"You told me that things would get better when there is more support for this community of people, and here we are. Things are getting worse in Broomhill [the neighbourhood in which the shelter is situated]. You allowed them to build it and they are coming and making our community worse."

"Why don't you stand up for our community and get this hazard out?"

"You should be embarrassed for not fighting to keep our community safe and beautiful. You are the voice of our town to BC Housing and John Horgan. We need you to speak up for the people of Sooke. You cannot risk the safety of the majority for the few." - https://sooke.civicw...BECDB8976C98CD6

Victoria is certainly one of the many places in BC that would be much better served by a ward system.

What's old is new again:

Daily Colonist

Ground for Inquiry

Internally in Victoria, this city did not make much progress while it retained its "ward" system. There was always a contest between the various wards: for roads, for schools, for fire halls, for this and for that. The abolition of the ward system coincided with the development of Victoria as one economic and cultural unit. Everyone in the community, and the thousands of people since attracted, have benefited from that. And today a two-mile circle around the City Hall stands for precisely nothing in plain common fact. The community overlaps it in every human sense.

The Ward system is responsible for increasing the number of municipalities in Victoria, which is why they got rid of it.  Outlying areas interests were different than the core but the ward system made sure they always had only one vote of many.  They were always overruled, so they left.

It was kinda like Together Victoria and their forcing of special interests on everyone.

Have seen this vehicle idling around the neighbour. Very smelly exhaust. Can't be environmentally sound.

Anyone else see this photo from beacon hill park today? Omg.

So looks like council has voted to continue to allow 24/7 encampments, as long as the tents are properly spaced... brilliant. Wouldn't that have been something they should've come up with like 5 months ago?

I thought I read Oak Bay was first to dump the ward system.

Maybe Victoria (and Saanich) should have had a U.S.-style constitution where a region can’t leave/secede unless 2/3 of the wards vote in favour ;)

It's still not brilliant. There is no justifiable reason not to enforce the existing overnight camping bylaws. As long as the CoV allows 24/7 camping we will continue to draw squatters from across the country (and beyond). Anyone who denies this is either a clueless SJW or a member of the local poverty industry.

That van with the hose out the bottom is still there and as we drove by with our windows open a crack, it stank to high heaven. The road underneath it was very wet.

Simple. Just go back to whatever smoke-free communities they were living in before migrating to the CoV.

Hilarity on Twitter as Adam Stirling exposes the mysterious Jamaican woman who has been cyberstalking him as in fact being an alias of the assault guy who runs the Beacon Hill Park tent city.

To make it better, the fake account had just 2 followers, one of which was the official Together Victoria account.

Fun times.

In the thread someone posted this. If there's a link to the same that's pretty concerning especially if they're offering anger management courses.

Police have arrested a man and will be laying charges against him after he allegedly stabbed a man so severely that the victim's arm was almost severed early Sunday morning.

Wow... wasn’t he under arrest here? I guess he went to Edmonton to escape, but he can’t escape himself. Sadly someone paid the price for it...
Hey, I thought the homeless didn’t move around?

In order to help speed up the rate at which people are killing themselves due to drug overdoses, the BC Government has decided that the solution is to make it easier for people to get free drugs. We know that hardcore addicts sell their free drugs to newbies and use the money to buy harder drugs.

B.C. nurses will be able prescribe drugs to help stop overdose deaths
