The agitators seem to have few, if any, concerns about using the assets paid for and maintained by "the man".

To say the least, this thread has degenerated - the veneer of civilization is very thin indeed in some people. 0/10, would not recommend to people wanting to see what vibrantvictoria is supposed to be like.

start piping in some Barry Manilow and they'll soon clear and put up some bright spotlights on the roof of the courthouse

There is a tunnel/underpass in downtown Ottawa that is constantly piping loud music that is adverse to what most of the general population would enjoy, deterring loitering for any reason and it seems to work. No graffiti, no kids hanging out skateboarding, drinking, doping, and definitely no homeless taking up residence. If anything I thought I might encounter an old couple in a dance down there sometime.

I'm pretty sure http was being ironic re: "the veneer of civilization".

Lots of activity on their FB page today. Judging by a lot of those comments, I’m thinking that inviting the public down to the tarp slum yesterday wasn’t such a good PR move for them. Seeing, feeling and smelling that crap-heap is a little different than watching it on TV. Often, when I hear an interview with one of the residents or supporters, they are bragging up the idea that the tent city is something great that they have accomplished on their own….that it is some sort of self-sufficient, self-governed Utopia that they have created by their own solidarity and force of will. Really, they are not asking for much…just a small chunk of land where they can create their new society…oh, and some free tarps and tents, and some firewood, and a staple gun, and a couple of USB ports to re-charge their electronics, and some free health care, and some food (with gluten-free options). Oh yes, and a Welfare cheque, some porta-potties, fresh water, warm clothes, lumber, nails, tools…. Calling these folks “hippies” is an insult to the hippies of my generation. There is something about this whole concept of “freedom” that they don’t quite get.

Just so this whole exercise wasn't a complete waste of everyone's time, can we at least agree on the big lesson that was learned? The "third world slum" model doesn't work, isn't safe, isn't clean, and actually aggravates many of the issues that need to be addressed. Whenever this model is promoted again it must be pointed out that it was a dysfunctional mess for several months on the courthouse lawn. Logic dictates that it should be a non-starter from this point forward. And it was never the sort of thing that a modern western city should have been aspiring to develop in the first place. If the idea of human beings huddled together on pallets on a muddy field floats your boat then suffice it to say, you don't have much respect for human beings.

I have a real problem with the entire premise whereby supposedly innovative solutions must = shantytowns of tents and/or doghouses. This format is undignified and uncivilized by its very nature and there are immediate hygiene and safety issues, as we've all seen. If we're going to offer free homes then we should do it right. No clumsy improvisation. The dwellings must be sited in an appropriate area and be purpose-built, safe, clean, dry and properly maintained. Anything less only perpetuates a culture of indignity. That culture of indignity might be politically useful to some people but for the vast majority of us it's no good for anything.

Well put aastra.  And to think this shantytown was along the lines of what the Mayor and (some) council were pushing for at Topaz...

We've got a long way to go.

But we've done it before and not learned.  Cridge Park, occupy Victoria etc.

There are two freedoms...the false, where a man is free to do what he likes; the true, where he is free to do what he ought.

Looks like there's mental health issues on both sides of the tent city...

There's something ironic about a community made up of people who've rejected the norms of community.

Sort of like libertarians banding together or anarchists organizing.

What did they expect? It's a protest now. A firmer hand is needed to clear the lawn. Not this polite "we would like you to leave please" crap.

Further article from CTV:
http://vancouverisla...vince-1.2794830

"A government spokesperson said the province is encouraging tent city residents to move in to available affordable housing and shelter spaces over the weekend.

It will then assess how many campers are still at the site and consider further action on Monday.

Those options could include filing an injunction to force campers out of the downtown Victoria site that more than 100 people call home.

The province said it wants to see the courthouse grounds return to being a public area."

I am trusting that the injunction is written, signed and simply waiting to be filed first thing Monday morning. These trespassers cannot be allowed to occupy this space any longer. Government and the tax paying public have been too tolerant for far too long.

Sounds like a grand total of 11 of the 150 spaces have been occupied and even then it sounds like some were simply xfers from other shelters.

Patience has worn thin, you mean.

I tend to say what i mean.

The situation is upsetting all around to people of all stripes.  My patience is not long at the best of times, but you don't see me openly advocating arson and targeted beatings as others on this thread have. I mean, wow.  I am tempted to swear.  I'm guessing that citified is taking a big chunk of your time, but you're still nominally in charge of the mods on VV, aren't you, Mike?  Could you please tell them to get back on it?

I'm inclined to agree with Baro, and you angry posters really really shoud think long and hard about Baro's point earlier, "..a little understanding that these people aren't all there."  Look in the mirror and ask why you've traded in your own humanity so cheaply.  Your answer is none of my business, but you might be interested in it if you have any of that said humanity left.
