Based on the issues experienced at 844 Johnson and now the nightmare that is the "supportive" housing in Nanaimo, perhaps it's time to admit that "housing first" with no additional supports is not a solution to homelessness.

I don't think anyone thinks that works. That's not even "housing first" that's "housing only"

But for the most part "housing only" is all we're seeing despite the hundreds of millions of dollars that have been allocated to the homelessness issue.

I can't understand how so many incumbents got back in talking about housing when clearly things are getting worse here. Don't ask me what but we need to be doing something differently.

one step could be supplying the housing at $375/mo. cash. and do away with the segregated welfare cheque. so now if you want this modular housing, cash your $710 or $850 welfare cheque and bring us the $375. now you’ll appreciate slightly more what is being provided.

right now these people in the modular housing get $335 ash with an apartment or $335 cash with no apartment. so they have less respect for their “free” home.

this might not work for all but it will for some.

The encampment near McKenzie and Douglas appears to be quite substantial. It looks like a significant structure has been constructed.

Apparently, the best way to combat homelessness is to increase the number of your executive level staff.

Our Place has strengthened its organization with the appointment of two new executives and elevating Don Evans to chief executive officer. Linda McLean has been appointed chief operating officer and Marg Rose has joined the organization as director of philanthropy. Evans was previously executive director...

I hope you are not suggesting that this is in fact a thriving industry, with a growing number of well-paid executives who have a vested interest (deliberate or not) in seeing homelessness continue.

Our Place's Directors are not paid, it's a volunteer Board

VW is correct. I know for certain that Don Evans makes a decent salary.

Like most big non-profits there is a volunteer board and paid directors (staff).

A board does the vision and oversight, the staff make it happen.

I hadn't even noticed the encampment was there and drive by quite often. I wonder if my recently stolen bike near McKenzie and Saanich can be found around there...

I have little doubt that the camp is full of all sorts of stolen stuff. Bikes, generators, tools, all kindly donated by the surrounding community. My question is why are they allowed to continue occupying this spot? It's MOT land clearly marked no trespass.

If I had to guess I would say the Province doesn't want to be seen as "anti-homeless" or draw any attention to the issue until after the by-election in Nanaimo.

Today via the DRA, with data from the Downtown Victoria Business Association.

Improperly discarded needles have tripled since roughly around the 2014 election, and graffiti "tags" have quadrupled.
