It’s a tiny bit windy today, but are “conditions” really going to be so much better tomorrow? Or is the required assistant not available on the weekend?

Amateurs in kayaks and snorkels doesn’t sound like the best search.

“HE HAS BEEN FOUND!!!!!!” wrote Nami Hewitt. “Thank you to every single person who stopped by, offered your homes, your equipment, to help search. Anyone who sent up a prayer, shared this post or engaged with it…we are so beyond thankful for you and being able to bring him home.”

The drowning happened Thursday around 5 p.m. when witnesses reported seeing a swimmer go under the water and not resurface. Several bystanders rushed to help but were unable to find him.

Emergency crews searched into the evening Thursday and returned Friday morning, including the RCMP Underwater Recovery Team.

West Shore RCMP confirmed the body had been located at around 4 p.m. Sunday and recovered by divers from the RCMP Underwater Recovery Team as well as View Royal Fire Department.

“We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones during this difficult time. Our thoughts are with them as they grieve this tragic loss,” RCMP said in a statement.

They said the search lasted as long as it did due to “challenging conditions” including dense seaweed, and thanked the dive teams and CRD park rangers for their help.

A Facebook post made early Saturday said his family had been told officials would not continue to look until Monday, once conditions improve.

Crazy conditions.  Including "seaweed" in a lake!

More likely milfoil. If that gets wrapped around your legs you could easily drown.

Eighty per cent of drownings happen in natural bodies of water like lakes and rivers, according to the Lifesaving Society, and those at higher risk include males, people with underlying medical conditions such as seizures, people with autism spectrum disorder and newcomers to Canada.

Deaths are most likely to occur during the summer, particularly in July and August and on weekends.

Island Health said that for every fatal drowning there are at least three non-fatal ones, which can result in brain or other organ damage. It said 27 per cent of non-fatal drownings involved alcohol or other substances.

Some odd statements there. In light of this, I’m
only going to allow my daughters to swim. Not my son. And even then, only on winter weekdays.

Until today I did not know you could drown but not die. But apparently that’s the case. If you are injured or die it’s considered drowning.

TIL the same thing. Huh. I always equate drowning with death. Seems to me they missed an adjective 'nearly'.

But anyways, you and your kids are probably at higher risk because of your stance against swimming lessons!

Penny Oleksiak banned from competition until 2027 after accepting penalty for whereabouts failures

Selected athletes must provide daily 60-minute availability window, 90 days in advance, to be tested

https://www.cbc.ca/s...-2027-9.6991795

In July, Swimming Canada CEO Suzanne Paulins said Oleksiak failed to keep her whereabouts information fully up to date with World Aquatics but described it as "an administrative mistake."

Just another world-class Olympic athlete making an "administrative mistake" - that comes with a 2-year suspension.

Gorge swimming could get a boost if city secures WAVE prize

One of the projects is a potential additional water or shoreline access point in Banfield Park, and site services for a public washroom and change facility at the popular swimming dock.

A mysterious white, foamy substance flowing into Langford Lake has prompted a Langford resident to demand action.

Clayton Leachman, a self-described “irate citizen” watches the the stream flow into Langford lake, and Leachman, a mail carrier, first noticed the dense, frothy substance in December 2023.

“It’s an oily goo,” he notes of the sediment which starts out as the foamy deposits, then settles at the bottom of the lake.
