Free Press co-founder Bari Weiss named editor in chief of CBS News

  • Paramount acquired the Free Press for $150 million and named its co-founder Bari Weiss as CBS News’ first-ever editor in chief.

Paramount has acquired the Free Press, a four-year-old digital news platform, and will make its controversial co-founder Bari Weiss editor in chief of CBS News, the company announced Monday.

The official announcement came after months of speculation on the deal and Weiss’ high-profile role within the news division. Weiss, 41, will report to Paramount Chief Executive David Ellison, who personally courted the former New York Times journalist.

The union of the Free Press and CBS News will be one of the most closely watched lab experiments in the modern media era. Weiss has no experience in television or running an editorial operation on the scale of CBS News, which has more than 1,000 employees.

CBS News staffers react to Bari Weiss being named editor-in-chief: ‘It’s utterly depressing’

Six network employees expressed a mix of emotions over the appointment in conversations with the Guardian

A throwing up emoji is not enough of a reflection of the feelings in here,” one particularly incensed CBS News employee said in a text message.

“It’s utterly depressing. Somebody who has zero experience in television news or even hard news for that matter … but with a clearly defined political agenda,” said another staffer. “It’s hard to see this as anything more than an attempt to bend the knee completely.”

They added: “It’s early days and we don’t know exactly how it’s going to pan out … or what she will do with her role, but she is the last person who should be brought in to CBS.”

“It’s been 18 months of lurching through reported mergers, legal threat, lawsuits, settlements, firings, yet another round of new leaders,” said a third CBS News employee.

“Here we go again – having to introduce and prove ourselves to new leaders with more perceptions and less actual understanding of the ebbs and flows of this organization.”

I’m not sure Bari Weiss is the right person for this job. I actually suspect she is not.

But the union reaction is hilarious.

John Oliver skewers Paramount for hiring ‘irresponsible’ Bari Weiss to run CBS News

‘It is especially alarming to have someone doing it who has spent years putting out work that, in my opinion, is at best irresponsible and at worst deeply misleading,” John Oliver declared on Sunday night.

Hollywood Was Happily Ignoring Bari Weiss—Until David Ellison Installed Her at CBS
As David Simon puts it, “Murrow and Cronkite have both interrupted their peaceful mouldering, and are now revolving at such speeds that never mind the affront to televised journalism—we need to consider the geologic risks to us all.”

Bari Weiss took on the tribalist, liberal media. And she's winning. Big time. | Opinion

Bari Weiss left The New York Times to create a new way for us to consume and debate news: The Free Press. She's been a resounding success – and CBS News noticed.
