Mango the Flamingo celebrates 50th birthday at Victoria Butterfly Gardens with public party

Mango’s 50th birthday is remarkable, considering the average lifespan for a wild flamingo is about 20 years shy of that.

“While these birds typically live up to 30 years in the wild, Mango has far surpassed that, making him one of, if not THE, oldest living flamingo in the world,” said Butterfly Gardens in a release Wednesday.

[...]

Mango was first brought to Vancouver Island after he was seized by Canadian authorities who found him being smuggled from Cuba to Toronto.

He was eventually brought to Crystal Garden Tropical Conservatory in downtown Victoria, but when it closed in 2004, he and his bonded partner – Houdini, another male flamingo – were relocated to Victoria Butterfly Gardens in Central Saanich.

I have a season pass. Great way to spend 30 min with the toddler on a cold day.

He flys solo these days, Houdini (his "dear friend" noted above) is long dead.

What do you do with a dead flamingo?

I had family members who live on an acreage who recently had a vet come to put down their elderly dog. The vet said it was illegal to leave the dead dog on their property so they could bury it. They had to pay for cremation service.

Where are Houdini’s remains?

Illegal to bury a pet on your own property? What about someone else’s property?

I think you can get heavy plastic bags and just put dead pets in the trash.

Use tuck tape to seal it.

We had a black cat when I was a kid named Midnight. One night, a neighbour said they found it dead on the road and brought it to the house in a trash bag. Dad put it in the garage for safe burial in the morning.

Of course us kids were all in tears crying ourselves to sleep when our actual cat came sauntering back in. Dad used to tell the story a little different - imagine mom and dad’s surprise when our reanimated cat came home.

Hey, this is VV. Just about everything we know, we learned from the collective works of Stephen King.

The deleted scene with the flamingo was crazy scary. Should have left it in.

Coming Halloween 2026, Samuel L Jackson’s “Flamingoes on a Plane”. Hold on to your hats, that’s going to be a banger weekend at the box office.
