‘More autonomy and control’: SRD director petitioning municipal status for Cortes Island

The petition asks the “Province of BC to work with the Cortes Island community and First Nations to explore our local governance, which may lead to a  referendum vote on whether we should incorporate.”

“I’d like to see 200 signatures,” he says.

He’s at more than 100 signatures so far.

“The potential upsides of incorporation are local control of services, bylaws, land use decisions, parks and planning. It would also mean our tax dollars would be spent hiring people who live and spend their pay cheques on Cortes,” he explains in a newsletter to the community.

The potential downsides could mean changes to property taxes he says.

"Changes to property taxes".   :rtfm:  :teacher:    How would they change, I wonder.  Did the reporter not ask?
