Got hit with a bad case of the duties!

Pays $20 a day! Goes up to $60/day after the 10th day and you're in the money after the 50th day at $100/day. Some provinces pay over $100/day from the start..

If I don't show I could get charged with contempt of court! No statistics to show how often this happens.. the only thing I can find is that 10 people were issued arrest warrants in Manitoba for no showing: https://www.cbc.ca/n...anada-1.1412886

And then the host of ways I could get charged with contempt of court if I do participate.. I've been watching both versions of 12 Angry Men, and the episode of the Simpsons where Homer gets jury duty.. I'm considering pulling a Klinger or just yelling guilty continuously through the jury selection. Although I suppose it does I guess gives me some sort of jollies knowing that part of somebody's freedom lies in my the palm of my hand.. and seeing behind the scenes. Frankly though jury duty sounds about as bad as jail.. with me aboard it could turn into 12 angry men very fast

Apparently you can even be plucked off the street in Canada for jury duty: https://www.cbc.ca/n...ction-1.6493797

Makes me wonder who they actually get. I guess you need to have "faith" in the system.. They claim I was randomly selected..

Family member down in the US before they became a Canadian tried getting out of jury duty because they were starting school, judge agreed but told them something to the effect of "people like you are the problem with the criminal justice system"

Anyway if you have a trial coming up be nice to me..

What you do as soon as you are asked to say anything, is scream “I can tell if they are guilty just by looking in their eyes!!!!!”

I don't want a local judge to remember me as a bad apple.

I was selected way back. The lawyers didn’t even ask questions. Just yay or nay in some strange hunger games speak. They had a pool of people that they selected for multiple cases. They were looking down at papers mostly and barely looking at us. No opportunity to say anything except at the start to ask the judge for freedom. The selection also didn’t look like dress made any difference nor demeanour. That was at least 20 years ago. I was not selected.

If you’re self-employed you get an instant out, if you ask.

At the time I wasn’t. So I just crossed my fingers. Not sure if crossing tentacles has the same effect.

95% of the time it gets cancelled even before you show up. If you go you might get lucky with some rich guy being charged with scamming the poor.

Jury duty is super easy to get out of. You just write to the sheriff with your woes.

That being said - I think jury duty would be fun.

Jury duty can be a trial so we understand why you'd object to it and want to bail. But some people get a charge out of it. That doesn't mean they're incompetent, irrelevant, or immaterial. You'd rather be out on a fishing expedition, maybe sitting on the dock, but they'd rather be in court. You can get angry about it a dozen times, man. But it won't change anything.

That's what I thought until I started thinking about it. How long will this thing actually go on? Days, weeks, months? Will we be sequestered? Will it be a five star hotel with all you can eat buffet? Will we have air conditioning in the jury room?(AC was not functioning in 12 Angry Men)

And of course the inevitable contempt charges. Don't think I could take more than a couple of days without blurting out some Jack Nicholson lines.. in 12 Angry Men there was almost an assault in the jury room..

Can't read/watch the news.

Sounds like school and I think I'd rather take a different course.

I probably would like to do it, but it is throwing a wrench in my plans

One way or another you should serve them notice that you'd prefer to remain on the bench for this one.

There you go. So it's not all bad.

I feel like I should note the eerie overlap between todd's jury duty dilemma and Sparky's floating outhouse. The key word is "chamber".

I mean, what are the odds? Methinks todd shouldn't be surprised if it turns out to be more than just a coincidence. If so, then that could be your way out.

I actually know of someone having a serious jury trial the last week in June. Do you have the dates of the trial?

I believe if you are over 65, you can choose to not take part with no excuses necessary.

Don't be so sure.

Sparky's floating outhouse. The key word is "chamber".

It's pronounced "the head" on a boat.

How is it pronounced on a floating outhouse?

You're out of order! This whole thread is out of order! If it's a floating colon hole it's a "head"! I assume it's floating on the outside
